Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket. 0824803639. 91 pages. hardcover. keywords: Aborigine Poetry Australia. DESCRIPTION - TARURU gives fascinating proof that Aboriginal culture is still alive and flourishing, and has even entered another dimension because of white influence. The book contains a selection, translation, and annotation of songs composed by modern Aborigines. They follow the same conventions as the tabis and similar songs which young men of the Pilbara region of Western Australia were taught to compose during their initiation period, long before the white man came. Tabis are individual songs, used to describe physical or spiritual feelings or experiences. Some, in their use of a few words to evoke a mood, have a kinship with Japanese haiku. The lifestyle of Pilbara Aborigines has changed radically during the past century and their songs have changed accordingly. They are still concerned with the outback world which they know best, but into this world the white man has intruded with all his foreign customs, machines, pastimes, and addictions. Numerous songs reflect the way in which these have been accepted or adapted by the Aborigines: some- times with awe, sometimes with humour or derision, and always with the poetic feelings and ability to express emotions. Eighty songs have been selected for the book, and these are presented in their original languages together with the translations and explanatory notes. The notes show the subtleties of Aboriginal word-forms and the skill of the translator who has rendered them into English. The songs illuminate both the traditional and the modern in Aboriginal experience and demonstrate an innate sensitivity and rhythm. inventory #23827 Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket.
