Diamonds and Toads is a translation of Les Fees, a little-known story that first appeared in Perrault's Histoires 1697, but the edition reproduced here was originally printed by T. Brandard, Birmingham. The second booklet Scripture Histories retells eight stories from both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. This booklet was printed by F. Houlston and Son, Wellington. The woodcuts in this booklet are appropriate to the texts. The third chapbook was published by John Golby Rusher, Banbury, who opened a printing office in 1808. Jack and Jill, and Old Dame Gill begins with a traditional English rhyme, dating perhaps from the early 17th century. The second verse is more recent, and the further 13 stanzas, found in many early 19th-century chapbooks, were added by an anonymous hand. The woodcuts were designed by George Cruikshank and then engraved by A. R. Branston. Jack and Jill is folded uncut, as originally printed. Written and illustrated entirely by hand, and 40 of the plates hand-colored, this meticulous volume replicates the Gand 1835-1840 first edition of Felix de Vigne's "Vade-mecum du peintre, ou, Recueil de costumes du moyen-âge, pour servir à l'histoire de la Belgique et pays circonvoisins." Boards and spine scuffed; title-page a little loose; occasional faint browning or dusty finger-smudge. In one instance, paint has oxidized, turning one figure's flesh a spotty grey. Bookplate and signature of John Brandard on front paste-down; and bookplate of noted antiquarian Harry Lawrence Bradfer-Lawrence on rear paste-down. Brandard has also signed the final leaf, with a calligraphic drawing of a bird, and "Finis." John Brandard (England, 1812-1863) was a lithographic artist, and long a partner of the printers M. and N. Hanhart, for whom he produced designs for Louis-Antoine Jullien, and hundreds of illustrated title-pages for sheet music. He brought the chromolithograph, which had been first used in connection with music in 1841, to an incredibly high level of sophistication, using half a dozen or more stones to produce a single image, printed on high quality paper. He employed two full-time assistants, allowing him to produce artwork quickly and prolifically, mainly concentrating on ballet and opera. His portraits of dancers were admired by Degas. The skill with which this volume is carried out suggests that it's the work of Brandard himself -- penmanship is tidy and legible, and the drawings and coloring capture fine details. A laid-in letter from 1889 discusses armour, as does a pencilled note laid-in at plate 54, so this volume was once carefully studied.

He sold it to Sir William Hamilton who had it repaired and hoped the British Museum would purchase it. When they declined it, he sent to his nephew George Grenville, 2nd Earl of Warwick, at Warwick Castle, who built a special greenhouse for it, designed by local architect, William Eboral. It is now in the Burrell Collection in Glasgow.The British Museum impression of this print has had the imprint removed.
