Hardcover. Condición: Very Good+. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good-. First Edition; First Printing. B & W photos; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 91 pages; New York: Thomas Nelson and Sons, 1934. First edition. Large near-square format. 91 pp. Illustrated with b&w photographs and figures. With two 10" 78 rpm records in the publisher's rear pocket (recordings of bird songs). Issued as an early sound-education "book + records" set, describing the then-developing methods used to capture and reproduce bird song, with notes on the individual species represented on the recordings. Brand was closely connected with the early Cornell bird-sound recording effort of the 1930s. Green cloth lettered in black; light fading at spine and a hint of blanching to upper board. Pictorial dust jacket with an inch chip at crown of spine panel; moderate toning and light shelf-soiling to panels. Records in the original pocket at rear. Record #2 appears very neat and playable. Record #1 has some lift to the wax surface side B amd appears to have some thin loss along the outer edge of Side B and may have issues on play quality. A notable early meeting point of field science and popular ornithology: a book-length introduction to recording bird song paired with contemporary 78 rpm audio examples. Records visually inspected; not play-tested. VG+/VG. …

1948. (Cloth) Near fine, no dust jacket. Four 78 RPM colored vinyl albums beautifully maintained in oblong 8vo book format with green cloth boards illustrated in black and a black taped spine. Bright and clean. . Includes: Spring Peeper, Common Tree Toad, Green Tree Frog, Anderson's Tree Frog, Barking Frog, Squirrel Tree Frog, Bird-Voiced Tree Frog, American Toad, Southern Toad, Oak Toad, Fowler's Toad, Spadefoot, Cricket Frog, Southern Swamp Cricket Frog, Eastern Swamp Cricket Frog, Western Swamp Cricket Frog, Pigmy Swamp Cricket Frog, Ornate Chorus Frog, Meadow Frog, Southern Meadow Frog, Pickerel Frog, Wood Frog, Sphagnum Frog, Mink Frog, Bullfrog, Green Frog. The calls of many of the eastern frogs and toads have been transferred to four double-sided records for the phonograph in the manner followed earlier in the 'American Bird Songs' prepared by the same lotmdation (see review in the Auk, 60: 288, April, 1943). Although not primarily ornithological, of course, these records are certain to be of interest to nature-lovers in general, many of whom must have wished to become familiar with the sounds of animals other than birds. It may be noted, incidentally, that a few bird voices have crept into these recordings, perhaps were purposely left there since the records are remarkably free from dis- turbing background noises. Some of the batrachian voices are, however, so powerful that other sounds accompanying them might not in any ease be too intrusive ! The inside of the cover of the album contains a list of the species lotrod on each record and the records, themselves, are individually labeled, while the well-known voice of Dr. Arthur A. Allen introduces each performer in turn. The album is thoroughly recommended to everyone interested in the sounds of nature.--J. T. Zimmer. …
