His Chinese and Japanese ceramics have been known for nearly three-quarters of a century through the publication of S. W. Bushell's Oriental Ceramic Art in 1897-99.4 But thus far, very few are aware that William T. Walters was also a great collector of Japanese lacquers. An account of the Walters collection in 1892 stated that "five hundred or more of the choicest lacquers are arranged in glass cases in the centre of the main picture gallery Beneath these cases are drawers filled with a striking collection of Inros and Netsukes. "5 Indeed, Mr. Walters founded an art treasure house in Baltimore, to which his son, Henry Walters (1848-1931), added vastly. Be-queathed by the latter to the City of Baltimore, the collection now forms the Walters Art Gallery. The lacquers to be dealt with in the present catalogue have been restricted on a qualitative basis to a total of 393 entries. Various categories of boxes, cabinets, censers, hair ornaments, tea jars, wine cups and writing stands make up this number. In spite of the fact that the seal cases (inro) are worn only occasionally nowadays by some strolling flute players (komuso), at the very end of 1965 I came across three instances of old country people in Fukui-ken and Ishikawa-ken who were still wearing an inro at the waist. However, it is hardly too much to say that for the greater part the inro have now been reduced to the status of mere toys, whereas the other items enumerated still play a part in contemporary Japanese daily life. Most of the lacquers presented here date from the nineteenth century (307), a lesser proportion from the eighteenth century (33), some from the transitional period between (48), and one piece may belong to the transition from the seventeenth to the eighteenth century, four examples date from the twentieth century. Lacquered sculptures and masks, vases and knife-cases (with elaborate metalwork) and some other single items have been omitted as having no direct bearing on the lacquer industry per se." excerpt from the introduction.
