Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the cooperative efforts of date growers and government agencies, spanning three decades, to eradicate the parlatoria date scale in the date-growing regions of the Southwest. Following the introduction of scale-infested date palms from the Old World in the 1890s, the scale spread to nearby seedling palms. The author recounts the development and implementation of effective eradication programs, detailing the challenges faced by agricultural officials, entomologists, and growers in controlling the resilient pest. The text delves into the complex biology of the scale and the unique characteristics of the date palm that made eradication difficult. The scale's persistence forced the adoption of the drastic torching method, which involved removing leaves and burning the exposed trunk surface. Hydrogen cyanide fumigation under metal containers was also employed, particularly for newly planted offshoots and small palms. The narrative highlights the gradual improvement in the situation as infested properties were identified, treated, and monitored, leading to a significant reduction in the scale population. The book concludes with insights into the significance of the eradication effort, emphasizing how the successful control of the parlatoria date scale paved the way for the development of a thriving date industry in the Southwest, ensuring the production of high-quality fruit.
