The whole for its compendious variety & exactness, preferable to all other books of roads hitherto published or proposed; and calculated not only for the direction of the traveller (as they are) but the general use of the gentleman and tradesman by Eman: Bowen engraver. First Edition 1720 Published in London in 1720 this is the First Edition, later issue of Britannia Depicta by Emanuel Bowen, which was based on the earlier work of John Ogilby who published the First British road Atlas in 1675 bound in a old full calf leather binding, 8 inches tall approx. a beautifully produced book of engraved county maps and strip road maps, for the traveller or coach driver. 273 pages, some cracking to leather joints though both boards firmly attached, scuffing and edge wear else binding is in good general condition, internally endpapers browned with old ownership inscription and a few small holes, the title page has been neatly strengthened with paper to leading edge, some light browning, and minor marks to a few page edges else contents in nice general condition, A GENERALLY VERY GOOD EXAMPLE OF A LATER ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION.

Original map, on laid paper with chain lines, pasted on to a thin white linen (? ) backing, 7 x 8 ¼ inches, map itself 5 3/8 x 7 3/8 inches, hand colored outlines, title in decorative cartouche. Good. Open ¾ inch and 1 ½ inch tears on right side edge with corresponding ½ x ½ x ¾ inch chip (just a bit…of the colored map border affected) , closed (thanks to backing) 2 ¾ inch tear on left, 2 vertical and 1 horizontal folds, with corresponding 2 inch closed tear at lower edge of vertical fold, intersected by a 5 ½ inch closed tear on the adjoining horizontal fold, two approximately ¼ inch chips, one on margin, other just to the right of Cuba, ½ inch deep x 3 inch long light tan stain on left blank margin, ¾ inch tape(? ) mark on lower edge, touch of foxing, mainly along edges, otherwise clean and unmarked. Depicts western hemisphere from Britain to the Pacific coast, southern portion of Greenland to north coast of South America, with 0 longitude being the Meridian of Ferro. Most of North America west of Hudson Bay through modern Oregon is labeled "Parts Undiscovered", with the "Supposed Str of Annian" being the limits of the then known world, Baja California rather wide, the mostly unknown Rocky Mountains shown as 4 ranges, but the eastern part of America is fairly accurate, a tribute to Bowen!
