However, we have seen a copy inscribed "This book was written by my father,Richard Bowden-Smith, and illustrated by my mother, Georgina Bowden-Smith",signed Walter Baird Bowden-Smith. There's a black and white plate showing how to arrange terminal tackle. The book is notable because it's the first work published about fly fishing in salt water. But no doubt fly fishing in the salt was done long before - it's likely one of Caligula's centurions, standing on the northern coast of Gaul after gathering seashells in 40 CE, slung his hair fly in the surf for pollack or trout; it's just that Aelian wasn't there to record it. Bowden-Smith describes fly fishing in the coastal waters of Ireland, England, Norway, and Nova Scotia.
