Full Leather Bound. Condición: Fair. No Jacket. 1st edition, Illustrated Edition. Paris, G. Martin, H. L. Guerin & L. F. Delatour, 1753. Octavo, (2) ff., X, 552 pp. Text in French. The library catalogue of Gros de Boze (1680-1753), perpetual secretary of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres and keeper of the royal Cabinet des médailles. It was compiled by Gabriel Martin, who brought modern bibliographical description and systematic classification to French book-sale catalogues. It lists 2,723 lots and includes an index of authors and tables of Elzevir, Delphin and variorum editions. The collection held block books and incunabula, among them a Gutenberg Bible described at lot 18. The announced sale never took place: Boutin and Cotte bought the library en bloc and dispersed it afterwards. This is the only edition of the sale catalogue. It should not be confused with the privately printed catalogue issued by the Imprimerie royale in 1745. Contemporary full brown calf. Spine with five raised bands, gilt fleurons, gilt rolls on the bands and a tan morocco lettering-piece. Spine well preserved, with bright gilt. Boards heavily worn: the calf is scuffed and sunned, with extensive staining to the upper board, and the corners are bumped and rubbed through to the board. Head and tail of the spine rubbed, head cap chipped and lettering-piece partly lifting. Text block sound. Paper evenly toned throughout. Title page soiled in the margin, with light foxing. Text clean. No early manuscript annotations. Modern bookseller's pencil notes on the first and last leaves. Edme Bouchardon (bandeau allégorique gravé par Pierre-Étienne Moitte) (ilustrador). …

Couverture rigide. Condición: Très bon. Edition originale. References : Bruand et Hébert 1970 [455-456]. ___________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________ENGLISH_DESCRIPTION : Beginning of the nineteenth century marbled paper hard cover. Folio (310x240 mm), engreved title and10 numbered plates. Rare and complete first edition. "Edme Bouchardon (1698-1762) was celebrated in his time as an exceptional artist," Bouchardon must have been a great man, "said the collector Pierre Jean Mariette," because he enjoyed all his reputation during his life." As a sculptor, he was nicknamed "the new Phidias", the modern equivalent of the greatest artist of ancient Greece, and as a draftsman he was considered one of the best in Europe. Historians of art have not changed today, Bouchardon being still considered one of the most creative and fascinating artists of the 18th century French, the one who played a decisive role in the transition from rockery to neoclassicism. " This quote comes from the preface of the catalog of the exhibition "Edme Bouchardon (1698-1762), une idée du beau", which took place in 2016, at the Louvre, and was written by Mr. J-L. Martinez ( President and director of the Louvre) and Mr.T. Potts (director of the J. Paul Getty Museum). It perfectly illustrates the genius of the artist. This collection of engravings, is cited in the chronology of the artist's works, in the catalog of the Louvre exhibition (p. 415). The engravings represent the god of Music and Love Apollo, followed by his muses Calliope, Clio, Erato, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsicore, Euterpe, Polimnia and Urania. The genius of the artist is illustrated, here, with balanced compositions, the detail of the draperies, the vigor but also the softness of the figures. They perfectly illustrate Neoclassical style and Bouchardon's maner, as a sculptor. This collection of engravings also shows his interest in the diffusion of his works, with the collaboration of the publisher and engraver Gabriel Huquier. He was an engraver and publisher (1695-1772) specializing in prints. He is the one who engraved and published the greatest number of prints from Bouchardon's drawings, more than a hundred. The engravings were not intended for the making of sculptures, but were drawings intended for a diverse audience such as artists, amateurs and collectors (as Mr. Gabriel Bernard de Rieux, cited on the title page). Very fine copy. References : Bruand et Hébert 1970 [455-456]. 262g.…

Folio. 24 etched plates including two titles, in two suites lettered A & B each numbered 1-12. Average size 195 x 135mm. Fine impressions with large margins, untrimmed. This copy also includes 9 additional engravings by Bouchardon. All the prints mounted on leaves. 19th century calf-backed marbled boards; banded spine with gilt tooling. Series of urns (etched by G. Huquier) of relatively simple basic shape usually with one complex, amorphous piece of decoration which adds a very plastic quality to the designs. Bouchardon was a friend of the Comte de Caylus and was distinguished by being the only artist praised by Le Blanc in his famous letter to Caylus criticising the bad taste in decoration and the too free range of Rococo ornamentation. As well as the 24 etched plates comprising the two books of vases, this copy also includes eight additional plates by Bouchardon: - The engraved title plate of 'Apollon et les Muses' (Huquier 1739); - 'Ite Nimphae, ponit arma feriatus est amor"; - An engraved plate of winged putti carrying shield, engraved by P. Soubeyran; - Two engravings of vases (uncut, wide margins); - The engraved title plate 'L'Anatomie necessaire pour l'usage du dessein'; - The folding plate 'Elevation geometrale et developpee de la fontaine erigee rue de Grenelle, Faubourg St. Germain'; - 'La fontaine des graces' (Huquier).…
