She is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from both sides without discrimination and for helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during the First World War, for which she was arrested. She was accused of treason, found guilty by a court-martial and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for mercy, she was shot by a German firing squad. Her execution received worldwide condemnation and extensive press coverage.

This example has been crudely bound in full leather with brown leather covers and red leather spine. The binding may well have been done by the author as his inscription is on the front pastedown which is part of the original binding CONDITION Leather binding rubbed but otherwise in solid condition, internally contents in good general condition, rear inner hinge is strengthened with tape which is just touching the numbers on the inner edge of last index page, else in acceptable condition.
