Añadir al carritoTrade Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Borein, Edward (illustrator) Ilustrador. First Bison Book Printing. 356 Pages. A reprint of a 1941 copyright of the Houghton Mifflin series Life in America. The first Bison Book was printed in 1977. Cover is a painting called Sandhill Ladies by Tom Beecham. Front Cover has very light wear to edges. Interior text pages are as new very white and tight. When Agnes Morley Cleaveland was born on a New Mexico cattle ranch in 1874 the term Wild West was a reality, not a cliche. In those days cowboys didn't know they were picturesque. Horse rustlers were to be handled as seemed best on the occasion, and young ladies thought nothing of punching cows and hunting grizzlies in between school terms. Here are the vivid details of the cattle industry from the earliest days of the open range. Contents in Five Parts: We Make Our Own Tracks, Mother Buys an Empire, Ray and I Take Over, Ray The Cattle King, and A New Era and an Old Ranch. Under Mrs. Cleaveland's hand, the whole brightly hued pattern of cow-country life of the latter half of the nineteenth century emerges with clarity. She regrets the changes that come with the years, the invasion of the country by literati and tourists, the theatrical changes in cowboys, the part the government has played in the division and control of the land. But her regret is not bitter; the humor and good sense and philosophy that characterize all her reactions are not absent in her critical iudgment. Authentic, well written, and, in many passages, downright charming.

Catalogue to accompany an exhibition held at the Gerald Peters Gallery, Santa Fe, NM, July 21 to September 11, 2000. Firm binding, clean inside copy. *** "John Edward Borein (1872-1945) was the oldest of five children, born into a politically inclined family in San Leandro, then a Western cow town on the main northern California cattle trail not far from Oakland. The constant stream of cattle and 'vaqueros' moving through his hometown had a powerful effect on the young Borein, who began to sketch these men and animals when he was but five years old. Borein's artistic bent was encouraged by his family, and after grade school he briefly enrolled at the San Francisco Art Association School, leaving to become a working cowboy himself. For several years, the artist combined the two occupations, becoming a skilled and prolific sketcher of the Old West and its life. A move to New York in 1907 helped to cement his reputation as an artist. Like his good friend Charles M. Russell, Borein stands today as one of the most artistically gifted and intellectually honest chroniclers of the American West and a way of life that has now passed almost completely away. A master at portraying cowboys, Indians and Western life and work, his early work documented the transition from Spanish to American influence in California. He continued to paint Western scenes until the end of his life. The fine sketches, etchings, drawings and watercolors of this self-taught artist come to life in this book." - Publisher. Size: 4to.
