Barnes & Noble Art Books refers to a range of affordable art publications issued by Barnes & Noble during the mid-20th century, including the 1960s. At that time, Barnes & Noble was not only a retailer but also an active publisher and reprint house, producing accessible editions of scholarly and semi-scholarly works. Their art books were typically designed to bring major artists and art movements to a broader audience at relatively low cost. These volumes often included introductory essays, selections of black-and-white or color illustrations, and occasionally reprints or adaptations of earlier European art studies. The scope of these books was similar in spirit to other mid-century art series: they covered well-known artists such as Albrecht Dürer, El Greco, and Paul Cézanne, as well as major styles and periods in Western art. The emphasis was on readability and educational value rather than cutting-edge scholarship, making them popular with students and general readers. Compared to series like those from Thames & Hudson, Barnes & Noble's offerings were often more variable in format and production quality, since many were reprints or adaptations rather than newly commissioned works. A. J. Bol was an author associated with one of these Barnes & Noble art volumes, known for writing on Albrecht Dürer. His work fits the general pattern of the series: a concise treatment of the artist's life and achievements, accompanied by illustrative material and explanatory notes. As with several contributors to such mid-century series, detailed biographical information about A. J. Bol is limited in widely available sources, and he is primarily known through this publication rather than a large body of widely recognized academic work.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. The I Ching, or Book of Changes, has been one of the two or three most influential books in the Chinese canon. It has been used by people on all levels of society, both as a method of divination and as a source of essential ideas about the nature of heaven, earth, and humankind. During the eleventh and twelfth centuries, Sung dynasty literati turned to it for guidance in their fundamental reworking of the classical traditions. This book explores how four leading thinkers--Su Shih, Shao Yung, Ch'eng I, and Chu Hsi--applied the I Ching to these projects. These four men used the Book of Changes in strikingly different ways. Yet each claimed to find in it a sure foundation for human values. Their work established not only new meanings for the text but also new models for governance and moral philosophy that would be debated throughout the next thousand years of Chinese intellectual history. By focusing on their uses of the I Ching, this study casts a unique light on the complex continuity-within-change and rich diversity of Sung culture. Originally published in 1990.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
