cloth, cloth-covered slipcase. large 12mo. cloth, cloth-covered slipcase. x, 412 pages. First edition. A fine copy in fine slipcase. In the 1560's, the imperial secretary of Ferdinand I, G. Bocskay (d.1575) produced a model book of calligraphy, mostly on vellum and decorated with gold and silver. About 1590, the Flemish miniaturist J. Hoefnagel also produced his own manuscript, a constructed alphabet of upper-case Roman and lower-case Gothic letters on 22 folios elaborately illuminated and decorated. This separate manuscript by Hoefnagel was then bound together with the Bocskay work illuminated by Hoefnagel, and the resulting work came, eventually, into the possession of the Getty Museum. A fifth essay, by Wilberg on constructed alphabets, follows this, followed in turn by reproductions of the Hoefnagel portion of the manuscript, in which reproductions alternate with pages of explanatory notes. Should interest students of late Renaissance calligraphy, or of late Renaissance-early Baroque imagery and symbolism. Calligraphy (ilustrador). …
