Original boards. = First Dutch translation of this mainly geological, palaeontological and zoological treatise on the natural history of Sicily, presented in the form of a series of letters by the Italian botanist and zoologist Paolo Silvio Boccone (1633-1704) to the foremost scientists of the early 18th century. Originally it was published in Italian as "Museo di fisica, e di esperienze variato e decorato di osservazioni naturali." (Venice, 1697). This seems to be the first Dutch edition. It is much rarer than the 's-Gravenhage [The Hague], Johannes de Cros edition, which is dated 1745. Pictorial bookplate, Bequest of Kenneth K. Mackenzie October 1934 mounted on frontispiece blank verso. Boards much rubbed; spine cover perished. Text and plates clean. In all a very good copy. Rare. Dean III, p. 218. Not in Nissen, ZBI.…

Amsterdam 1674. Small 8vo. (15 x 9.5 cm). Contemporary full calf, with raised bands. A nice copy. With frontispiece and 16 plates. CompletePaolo Boccone was a Sicilian botanist and naturalist. He became botanist to the Grand Duke of Tuscany in Florence and seems to have retained that position throughout his life, although he spent much of his time elsewhere, especially in Paris, where he introduced noble families to the joys of amassing a Wunderkammer. This lovely book opens with an allegorical frontispiece, showing naked Truth being revealed by experimental Inquiry (wearing a cloak covered with ants and wielding a magnifying glass). Boccone firmly believed that fossils such as ammonites, which previously had been characterized as productions of the earth, were in fact the remains of living creatures. The plates show the eruption of Mount Etna, fish, plants, shells, fossils, the bezoar, corals, and more. …
