Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the sediment toxicity of the Mississippi River by studying porewaters collected from sediments in Pool 15. The authors conducted toxicity assays on sediment porewaters collected during 1994 and 1995 using C. dubia and a mussel filtering assay using T. truncata. The findings indicate that toxic sediments do occur within Pool 15, particularly within Sylvan Slough, home to the federally endangered Higgins eye pearly mussel. The mussel filtering assay, using native mussel species, proved to be an inexpensive tool for assessing sediment toxicity and could be utilized for future studies. The author recommends further monitoring of sediments in Pool 15 and other Illinois mussel refuges to protect and conserve native mussel populations. This book contributes to the understanding of sediment toxicity in the Upper Mississippi River and highlights the importance of monitoring and protecting freshwater ecosystems for the conservation of endangered species like the Higgins eye pearly mussel. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the effects of fleeting, a barge mooring process, on freshwater mussel populations, which are a vital part of aquatic ecosystems. The author conducted a controlled experiment by marking mussels, placing them in enclosures, and tracking them over several months in both areas subject to fleeting and control areas. The results suggest that fleeting has negative short-term effects on mussels, including increased shell damage and mortality. The study provides valuable insights into the potential ecological impacts of fleeting and emphasizes the need for careful consideration of its effects on aquatic ecosystems, particularly in areas where mussel populations are already under stress. Using accessible language and numerous charts and graphs, the book not only documents long-term trends in fish populations but also discusses their implications for the health of the river ecosystem as a whole. This book is an essential read for anglers, environmentalists, and anyone interested in the preservation of aquatic ecosystems.
