Añadir al carritoFirst edition; complete with 30 colour engravings with some colours applied by hand, contents clean; 5 unopened text fascicles with original unattached blue paper cover sheets printed in black, one cover with a portion of a contemporary library ticket attached, the covers creased and chipped along the edges and a little dulled,…the whole never bound and housed in a custom cloth folding case by Bainbridge Conservation, very good condition; 93pp. First edition of one of the earliest works on the anatomy of tissues rather than organs or organ systems, and one of the earliest microscopical works printed in colour. A never bound, unopened copy complete with all thirty plates and the original blue paper covers. Rare; only three copies have appeared at auction since 1992, one of which was incomplete, and WorldCat locates no institutional copies. Jan Bleuland (1756-1838) attended the University of Leiden, where he learned the art of preserving anatomical specimens by injection under Eduard Sandifort. After graduating in 1780 he practised medicine in Gouda and taught anatomy, physiology, surgery, and obstetrics at the universities in Hardewijk and Utrecht. 'During his career Bleuland published a number of illustrated anatomical works printed in colour, showing a special interest in the fine structure of healthy and diseased states of the organs and tunics of the digestive tract. Bleuland made a collection of over two and a half thousand anatomical preparations' which he used to prepare his publications, and which were later purchased by the government for the Utrecht anatomical museum (Meli, 'The Rise of Pathological Illustrations: Baillie, Bleuland, and Their Collections', Bulletin of the History of Medicine, volume 89, number 2, pp. 234-235). 'As in previous works he published, Bleuland was especially interested in the vascular structure of tunics and membranes and focused on what he called anatomia subtiliore, relying on microscopy' (p. 236). He took advantage of a variety of new printing techniques, including copperplate engraving, aquatint, and lithography, to create different visual effects, even for different illustrations within the same work. The years of Bleuland's professional life 'witnessed major transformations both in medicine â" involving notions of disease, hospital medicine, and clinical training â" and in visual representations â" with the rise of tonal printing processes and lithography' (pp. 209-210). His works 'occupy a significant role in the history of medicine: they reflected crucial transformation in the notion of disease, and, at the same time, played a key cognitive and heuristic role in those transformations by focusing on local lesions and structural changes' (p. 210).

Añadir al carritoCondición: Near Fine. 8vo. [1 (title leaf), 1 (dedication leaf)], 36 pages. Colour engraving and letterpress, bound in modern half-cloth with red spine and marbled boards. Splendid copy of this first edition of Jan Bleuland's groundbreaking histological study on lymphatic vessels, illustrated with probably the first appearance o…f colour-printing of microscopical subjects. - Author, Content, illustration: Present publication is one of a series of Bleuland's monographs, all illustrated with a pioneering method of tissue fixing and dyeing and colour-printing, whereby the author established a standard for histological illustration. Jan Bleuland (1756-1838), professor of anatomy, surgery, and obstetrics at Harderwyck, later at Leiden and Utrecht, perfected a technique of injecting tissue structures with fixatives and dyes to reveal anatomical details, particularly useful under magnification. The accompanying plates based on tissues visualised in such a way, mostly drawn by Martinus van der Jagt and engraved by Jan Kobell, are remarkable for their precision in depicting microscopic detail. Edgar Goldschmid considered them pieces of exemplary printing, unusual in subject and make-up for the period. They are probably the first examples of colour-printing of microscopical subjects. Bleuland would prepare more than two thousand anatomical specimen, which were bought in 1825 by King William I. of the Netherlands for the Anatomical Museum of Utrecht, nowadays named »Museum Bleulandinum«. - Condition: Ex-Library copy, though with barely seeable remarks of this provenance, just a pencil annotation on the title page as well as a decent ex-library stamp on the inner side of the rear cover; printing is not affected whatsoever. Generally a fine copy on large and thick paper, uncut in original paper boards, the engraving of utmost clarity. - Rarity: Scarcely offered indeed, according to RBH and JAP/APO auctioned only twice in the last 30 years (2012, 1988). - References: Anatomie de la couleur 124; Blake p 50; Goldschmid, Entwicklung und Bibliography der pathologisch-anatomischen, 1925, illustr. 86; Hirsch II, 485; Landwehr 19; not in Waller or Wellcome; Thieme/Becker XVIII (1925) WBIS/BAB I 348, 175-180; II 136, 63 (Van der Jagt) and Thieme/Becker XXI (1927) cit. Añadir al carritoOriginal and only edition of this celebrated anatomical treatise written by Jan Bleuland (1756-1838), a highly distinguished Dutch physician at Gouda and later - in part thanks to this publication - professor of medicine and anatomy at Utrecht University. Bleuland was famous for his pioneering technique of injecting coloured wax… or liquids into microscopic blood vessels to make them clearly visible for study. Published in Utrecht by Bartholomé de Wild, the publication is a highly valued collector's item due to its early use of coloured anatomical plates to represent the human vascular system as true to life as possible. The preparations described here, became part of Bleuland's extensive personal collection of anatomical specimens, which is still preserved today in the Bleuland Cabinet as part of the Utrecht University Museum.Bleuland published a number of other illustrated anatomical works printed in colour, including his Observationes anatomico-medicae de sana et morbosa oesaphagi structura (Leiden 1785) with a plate engraved by the engraver and etcher Robert Muys (1742-1825); other artists who worked for Bleuland include Jan Kobell (1779-1814) and Martinus van der Jagt (1717-1859).With some offsetting of the plate to the facing page (p. 8), and some foxing to the plate. Otherwise in very good condition.l Cat. Bibliotheek Ned. Maatsch. Tot bevordering der Geneeskunst, I, p. 95; Meli, Visualizing Disease (2017), p. 85; NNBW, 1 (1911), cols. 70-71; Van der Zwaluw, "Dr. Jan Bleuland, man van de Verlichting", in: Tidinge van de Goude (Hist. Ver. Die Goude), 38 (2020), pp, 44-53. Unbound, kept together by a thin strip of paper glued along the spine. With an engraved plate, containing two illustrations printed in colour, depicting two sides of the liver of an eight-month-old foetus (showing filled arterial vessels, expressed in their natural colour). Further with a woodcut vignette on the title page and a large woodcut tailpiece on p. 8. Pages: 8, [1], [1 blank] pp.

"During his career Bleuland published a number of illustrated anatomical works printed in color, showing a special interest in the fine structure of healthy and diseased states of the organs and tunics of the digestive tract. Bleuland made a collection of over two and a half thousand anatomical preparations, with the assistance of Petrus Koning, whom he had trained as his attendant and as a surgeon from 1800, when the boy was thirteen. The government bought Bleuland's collection for the Utrecht anatomical museum, and starting in 1826, Bleuland began producing both an inventory, Descriptio musei anatomici (Utrecht, 1826) and a more detailed illustrated catalogue of select specimens, Otium academicum (Utrecht, 1826-28). A notable feature of Bleuland's work is that he often tells us how his preparations were made, which vessels he injected, how slowly he injected them, which colors and at times which substance he used-such as mercury.
