Allerdings überrascht eine solche aus der Feder eines in der Erforschung der Geschichte des klassischen Griechenlands, der römischen Republik und besonders der Spätantike sehr verdienstvollen Alth…istorikers, der sich bezüglich der germanisch-römischen Beziehungen aber nicht auf nennenswerte eigene Untersuchungen stützen kann. Vermutlich begründet indes gerade diese Distanz zu den oft kleinlichen Forschungskontroversen den Erfolg dieser umfassenden und zugleich ausgewogenen Darstellung auf hohem wissenschaftlichem Niveau. Nach einem knappen Vorwort und einer umfänglichen Einleitung (S.11-47) in die komplizierten und komplexen Sachverhalte von 'Germanen' in Selbst- und Fremdwahrnehmung, Sprache, modernen Definitionen, konträren Germanenbegriffen, kulturellen und religiösen Gemeinsamkeiten, Ethnographie und Rassetheorien schildert Bruno Bleckmann leicht verständlich und weitgehend nach dem gegenwärtigen Forschungsstand deren Geschichte in sechs Kapiteln von den Anfängen bis zu den Wikingern. Ein so weit gefasster Ansatz aus der Sicht eines Althistorikers ist nicht selbstverständlich, aber schon deshalb begrüßenswert, weil er Epochen übergreifend auch das oft vernachlässigte Germanentum in England und Skandinavien berücksichtigt.
