A full description & detailed review of the performance of this particular pantomime which appeared at the time in The Penny Illustrated Paper, London, 31 December 1887 is available online at Footlight Notes (No. 332). Apparently Joseph Merrick (the Elephant Man) attended a performance of this pantomime (see "Pantomimes at Drury Lane" - it's behind you .com). The Open Library Online has listed this title as a "libretto with incipits (in various formats) of some of the songs". The French literary fairy tale was written by Charles Perrault around 1697. It was first published in 1697 in France, & first published in English in 1729. E.L. Blanchard (1820-1889) was the author of Drury Lane pantomimes from 1852-1888. Walter Alfred Slaughter (1860-1908) was an English conductor & composer of musical comedy, comic opera & children's shows. Augustus Harris (1852-1896) managed London's famed Drury Lane Theatre. Note: A FAIR COPY ONLY. Much handling wear, several chips & moderate edgewear to fragile paper cover, lower corner piece of front cover almost detached (barely holding on), front cover attached at inner margin with glue, former owner's neat ink notation to upper right corner of title page, otherwise a nice clean softcover copy of a very scarce item.
