From John Feather's 'A Dictionary of Book History': "Our principal source of information about the existence and operation of the congers in their early years is from a financial notebook kept by two members of the wholesaling conger, Thomas Bennet and Henry Clements, from 1686 to 1719. This is now in the Bodleian Library, Oxford (MS. Eng. misc. d. 988),.This manuscript formed the basis of the standard work on the subject: Norma Hodgson and Cyprian Blagden. The Notebook of Thomas Bennet and Henry Clements (1686-1719) with Some Aspects of Book Trade Practice (OBS, new scr., 6, 1956). " From the Introduction: " It has not here been attempted to reprint the book as it stands.The contents have instead been assembled under three main heads, each with an introduction and discussion. Bennet's foreign correspondence, consisting of copies of his outgoing letters to booksellers in Holland, France, and Germany, forms the first distinct group and is here printed in full (Chapter II) with the exception of a few pages of accounts. . The second group, in which by far the strongest interest is concentrated, is dealt with in Chapter III,'The Trade in London'.
