1998, xvi,536pp, Illustrated. Cloth. With dustjacket. In very good condition. Pakketzending. This study describes the books produced by one of America's most controversial publishers, Thomas Bird Mosher, whose editions helped disseminate British literature and design to the American public. Variously described as 'literary pirate' by some yet praised as 'prince of publishers' by others, Mosher's passion for literary texts led him to reprint books without the author's permission, though he often paid royalties. Mosher never technically broke any copyright laws, and many authors defended him for assisting in introducing the American public to authors such as William Morris, Oscar Wilde, Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Pater, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, George Meredith, Robert Browning and George Gissing in affordable editions. The designs of Blake, Rossetti, Pissarro, Strang, Morris and MacMurdo and presses such as the Vale, Chiswick and Kelmscott also appeared in 'The Mosher Books'. This study provides the story behind the literary piracy slanders against Mosher and includes sections on various aspects of 'The Mosher Books' such as books printed on vellum, privately printed books and an illustrated section on bindings. …

Hardcover. Condición: New. New DJ (still in shrinkwrap). First Edition (so stated). New Castle, Delaware / London: Oak Knoll Press / The British Library, 1998. Brand New in a Brand New dust jacket. Perfect condition. STILL SEALED in the publisher's clear plastic SHRINKWRAP. NO rubbing. NO fading. Bright, shiny, clean, square and tight. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a remainder. NOT a library discard. Fresh and crisp -- obviously never read. 1998. First Edition (so stated). Introduction by William E. Fredeman. Index. Bound in the original gilt-stamped brown cloth. From the dust jacket: "Anyone interested in the spread of British fine literature and book design through the private press movement must take Mosher into account. For American popular culture, he was a prime conduit disseminating the more exotic literary fruits of the Aesthetic, Pre-Raphaelite, and Arts and Crafts movements This exhaustive study not only provides abundant new primary research, including new evidence on royalties paid, but also presents its contents in a novel way. An overview with tables and graphs and a set of highly useful appendices neatly cross-reference with the primary bibliography, now newly augmented with two checklists of publications by Mosher's 'successors'. The opening section is particularly useful in clearly presenting the various series, privately printed books, and books printed on vellum. The full color illustrated section on bindings adds yet another dimension showing the respect Mosher' s imprints command. Acclaims and criticisms of Mosher's publishing balance the record. A descriptive index, and an annotated and cross-referenced bibliography on Mosher himself, round out this work's strengths." Full title: "Thomas Bird Mosher, Pirate Prince of Publishers : A Comprehensive Bibliography and Source Guide to The Mosher Books Reflecting England's National Literature & Design." Oversize Hardcover. 8.75" wide by 11.25" tall. This large, heavy book will require extra postage for international shipments, but only the standard charge for priority or media mail.
