Hardcover, red cloth boards with gilt text on front and spine exterior show spotting and soiling along with edge and corner wear, spine shows some sunning. The internal binding has hinge cracks at both boards but the text pages are good. Front and r…ear end pages of chipping because the paper is brittle. Front end page also contains original 1908 owner name and date. Text pages are printed on heavy bond paper with 25 plates tipped on brown card stock bond. Each image is protected with tissue guard and all have been verified as being present. No other markings found other than the 1908 signature, no bookplates, no library markings. Paper is toned due to age and there is some light scattered foxing present. No publication date listed for the Philadelphia edition but George W. Jacobs & Company lists the title as a gift book in the Publishers'Weekly of September 28, 1907 (page 932). Uncommon to find the US printing. Birket Foster (ilustrador).

Full brown morocco leather bound cover with 5 raised bands, gilt stamping, and blind stamped decor is worn at extremities and frayed at corners but clean, bright, and in good+ condition. Leather has been treated with professional leather cover preservation treatment to stop…and prevent deterioration. Boards and spine are straight. Binding is tight. Marbled end sheets and paste downs clean and vibrant. Frontispieces and plates throughout protected by tissue with only a hint of toning and no foxing and very sparse, modest soiling from handling. However, first 20 pages have an old faint damp stain in the lower margin along the bottom and side of the pages (not affecting the text and engraved areas) becoming only a small faint damp stain in the bottom margin of the rest of the pages. Pages are otherwise lightly toned with sparse, modest soiling from thumbing but overall in very good condition. .

What I can say about it is that it is holding together very well for being as old as it is. The illustrations are charming. But the exterior is not in good shape. All the edges are leaking cotton batting, and the spine p…late is missing. The waxed cloth is soiled, stained, and missing some pieces, but the illustrations both front and back are complete, such as they are. This is NOT a pretty collectible, but it seems to be the only one of its kind left on the planet. I'd love to be proven wrong, but until I am, this one needs to go to a good caretaker. Size: 8vo - 7" to 9" Tall. Birket Foster and W. L. Shheppard and W. L. Taylor and Francis Miller (ilustrador). Book.
