Condición: new. ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1975). (1940) 1975 3rd edition. 8vo (140 x 222mm). Ppxvi,240. B/w photograph plates, illustrations. Salmon boards, spine titled in gilt. Spotting to end-papers and edges else clean internally, smells slightly musty owing to long storage. Good copy in used dust-wrapper. Noel M. Sedgwick, then editor of The Shooting Times, gives good advice and instructions for the teenage reader. And, indeed, for anyone else who is interested in the subject. A whole genre of shooting books exists which deals with the new conditions prevailing after the Second World War. This book, published in 1942, is perhaps the first, since Sedgwick explains in his foreword that "since commencing to write this book, many and startling changes have overcome the shooting world, owing to the prosecution of the war. Almost in a night, it seems, the face of our island home has changed". And more was to come. Chapters include: Shooting to-day; Safety first; Guns and cartridges; How to shoot; Behaviour in the shooting field; The sportsman-naturalist; Vermin; Rooks and rook shooting; Trapping and snaring; Ferreting; Pigeon shooting 1; Pigeon shooting 2; Rough shooting; The grouse; The pheasant; The partridge; Snipe; The woodcock; The hare; The not-so-humble rabbit; Inland marshes; Wildfowling; Dogs and dog-training. A good read and still useful. .

Red cloth, spine titled in black. Slight fading to spin, slight browning but very good. Lacks dust-wrapper. Noel Sedgwick was the editor of The Shooting Times and begin this book with material he wrote for this paper. "As Editor of this journal, and as a member of various committees allied to sport, I am naturally in a very favourable position to observe and to understand many matters which may not be altogether clear to the 'ordinary reader'. In this respect, and while giving away nothing of a confidential nature, I have devoted one chapter to the vexed question of wildfowl protection, for I feel most strongly that every sportsman, whether he is a wildfowler or not, should be made aware of the very real dangers to his interests. Apart from this chapter, I have endeavoured to write on those very ordinary subjects which I believe will interest the great majority of shooting men, rather than a section of them. There is little in this book about organised shooting (or large bags), except as it affects those who occasionally shoot as guests and those who love dog work, especially that concerning picking-up at organised shoots. Every shooting man is, or should be, an amateur naturalist, enjoying to the full his environments and the wild life he sees, and being able to identify the more common birds, interpreting their voices and movements to his own benefit. For that reason, a certain amount of natural history will be found among the chapters on shooting." Chapters include: Working for your game; Wildfowl protection; Shooting field problems; Bane of the keeper; Rabbits and rabbiting; Side-lights on hares; Pigeon shooting small days; Round and about; Very rough shooting; From my diary; Natural history casebook; Pastures new. .

Green cloth, spine titled in gilt. Minor faults, slight stains / dents / marks to cloth, slight use and browning to end-papers and edges. Good, lacks dust-wrapper. Noel Sedgwick was the editor of the Shooting Times for many years. In this volume he gives much good advice about wildfowling and rough shooting, with many anecdotes of his own experiences. The era saw position of the wildfowler and his quarry deteriorate, in part because of the war itself, and in part because of post-war reconstruction and the 'modernisation' which was just getting under way. Practical and interesting from a number of angles. Chapters include: Estuary shooting - I; Estuary shooting - II; Conservation of wildfowl; Swans and plover; Partridge days; More about partridges; Pheasant nostalgia; Poor man's pheasant; Deer, rabbits and stoats; By the way; Still by the way; Random jottings; Very good material; Return to the estuary. .

Sedgwick, then editor of The Shooting Times, recounts his shooting exploits in the countryside and on the foreshore. "A particularly interesting feature of his book is the author's carefully recorded notes on the effect of the bitter winter of 1946 - 1947, with its snow and floods, on game and all wildlife." Chapters include: Muds and saltings; Muds and saltings II; Snow and floods; Inland duck and snipe shooting; Pheasants and partridges; High ground driving; Ground game and vermin; Foxes and badgers; Natural history in the shooting field; Building up a rough shoot; Trials of a rough shooter; Game pie; Random observations; The partridge covey. .

ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1951). 1951 1st edition. 8vo (142 x 222mm). Ppxii,207,ads. B/w photographs. Red cloth, spine titled in black. Very good in well-used dust-wrapper. For that reason, a certain amount of natural history will be found among the chapters on shooting." Chapters include: Working for your game; Wildfowl protection; Shooting field problems; Bane of the keeper; Rabbits and rabbiting; Side-lights on hares; Pigeon shooting small days; Round and about; Very rough shooting; From my diary; Natural history casebook; Pastures new. .

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book discusses the profound evolution of the care provided to wounded soldiers from antiquity to the 19th century. Throughout history, the treatment of the wounded has been shaped by the development of medical practices and warfare technologies. The author traces the contributions of pivotal figures like Hippocrates, Galen, and Henri Dunant to the field of military medicine. The book further examines how the interplay of war, religion, and science has impacted the treatment of wounded soldiers, leading to the establishment of organizations like the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and the Geneva Convention. Exploring themes of compassion, innovation, and the horrors of war, this book illuminates the remarkable progress in treating wounded soldiers, a testament to the dedication of those committed to alleviating human suffering amidst conflict. Green cloth, spine titled in gilt, original green dust-wrapper. Very light browning to front end-paper o/w very good. Abraded crease to spine of rubbed, price-clipped dust-wrapper. Oddly, this title was initially bound without a blank front end-paper. Early copies were sent out in this form, however at some point the publisher decided that this page was needed and so a blank front end-paper was tipped-in. This copy has a tipped-in front end-paper. Chapters on shooting woodcock, snipe, golden and grey plover, curlew and whimbrel, redshank and bar-tailed godwit. These latter five were legitimate quarry species until 1981. Another good title in this fine series which retains its interest and utility. .
