In 1873 the name of Henry Blackwell appears in the Liverpool directory as a bookbinder. He went to New York in 1877 where he supervised a large bindery. Blackwell played a prominent part in the Welsh-American life of his adopted country. He was a life-member of the S. Davids Society of the State of New York , a life-member of the Virginia Historical Society , one of the founders of the Ex-Libris Society, Washington , a vice-president and governor of the American Society, 1912 , a member of the Welsh Society of Philadelphia , and a member of a committee formed in 1890 to found a chair of Celtic at Marietta College . He was secretary of the eisteddfod held in New York in Feb. 1886 ; at this eisteddfod he won the prize for a bibliography of Welsh books and Welsh authors in America . He was also secretary of the New York eisteddfod of 1888 . In Britain he was a member of the Hon. Society of Cymmrodorion and of the Welsh Bibliographical Society . He visited Wales in 1911 for the national eisteddfod held at Carmarthen . Blackwell 's printed literary and bibliographical work appears mainly in journals. In Jan. 1914 he began to publish Cambrian Gleanings: a monthly Magazine , edited by himself at University Place and Tenth Street , New York . This survived only until the Sept. number. The May issue has a list of ¿ Printers of books in Welsh in the United States .¿ He had previously contributed to such British and American newspapers and journals as Oswestry Advertizer , Jan. 1890 (¿ Catalogues of Welsh MSS. ¿), and Aug. 1891 (¿ A Collection of Welsh Travels ¿) (both were afterwards reprinted in Bye-Gones ), Red Dragon, Old Welsh Chips, 1888 (¿ Bibliography of local and county Histories relating to Wales and Monmouth ¿, and ¿ List of Bibles and Testaments in the Welsh Language published in the United States ¿), Y Drych , The Druid , The Cambrian , 1882 , and 1884 (a catalogue of his library of books in the English language relating to Wales and the Welsh ), and Old Brecknock Chips , 1886 (¿ Brecknockshire authors and books printed in Brecknockshire ¿). He had proposed to issue in 1886 an America n edition of Jane Williams : A History of Wales ¿( London , 1869 ); another appeal for subscribers appeared in 1889 . Blackwell 's bibliography, when it was awarded the prize at the 1886 New York eisteddfod , contained 469 titles. Writing twenty-three years later the compiler said: ¿I have in manuscript a list of over one thousand titles on the same topic.¿ This manuscript ( N.L.W. MS. 9278 ) (including items added from time to time) was published by the National Library of Wales in 1942 under the title A Bibliography of Welsh Americana. The greater part of Blackwell 's bibliographical and biographical work is, however, unpublished. The following manuscripts are in the National Library of Wales: A Dictionary of Welsh Biography (27 v); and Cambrian National Bibliography (5 vol).

Volume II only of Two Volumes. . Size - 8 x 5 inches, pp. 2 (half-title and title pages) + 395, marbled endpapers, hardback in half leather binding. Book condition - Good plus ; preliminaries front and back somewhat soiled but text block less so though still of a dusty appearance, no foxing, printed (ownership ?) at the top corn…er of the title page ("J. Hopkinson"), inner hinges intact ; black leather spine with gilt title and simple ruled bands, marbed paper covered boards with vellum corners ; corners bent, board edges rubbed with some paper loss, back with no marks as such but quite rubbed, spine with no loss at the foot but there is a few mm of loss and rubbing at the head, gilt remains complete and bright, front and back hinges with evidence of rubbing but not split, front cover with one smallish spot mark and again quite heavily rubbed. Please see photos for indications of condition and contents. The contents cover Italian, French, German and British composers and writers for the period 1700 to 1812. According to Wikipedia, the author, William Bingley, was a cleric, naturalist and writer and served the curacy of Christchurch in Hampshire for many years. The British Library states that this 1814 issue is the second edition, but the Wikipedia entry reads that the book was first issued anonymously in1814 (as here), and was re-issued in 1834 with the author's name added to the title page. Very scarce, with no other original early copies found on the internet at the time of this listing.

The only publication det…ails present is to the plate I of 'Asia' which states 'published by Harvey and Darton Jan 1 1823'. The title of the works these plates are from and author information of the original text is taken from Copac. Comprising of four plates for Asia, five plates for North Europe, Five plates for South Europe, four plates for Africa, three plates for North America and three plates for South America. There are three images per plate of varying locations worldwide including Jerusalem, Calcutta, Pekin, Geneva and Montreal. In a tooled calf binding . Externally, rubbed to the extremities and spine. Loss to the head of spine. Cracks to the head of both joints. Both hinges are tender. Bookplate to front pastedown with three fleur de lis being held inside a wreath by a woman. Renewed endpapers, retaining the original blanks.Seventy-one engraved plates from original drawings, executed by Mr. Samuel Howitt. Collated, complete.This early 19th-century work offers descriptions of various British mammals and their habitats, characteristics and observed behaviours - organised by Linnaean classification.With a focus on common and domestic animals such as rodents, sheep, dogs, horses, cows and mice, as well as bats, deer, otters etc.Compiled by William Bingley, an English cleric and prolific naturalist and writer, with popular works including his Tour round North Wales, Animal Biography, Animated Nature and Practical Introduction to Botany, among others. Rebacked in half calf. Externally, boards are scuffed, with rubbing to the original calf corners. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are toned and spotted in places throughout, most commonly to the plates and facing pages. Tide mark to the first few leaves. Contemporary ink inscription to title page, now trimmed. Good.
