Enamelled and jewelled objects from the Sadberk Hanim Museum Collection.= Cevher. Sadberk Hanim Müzesi Koleksiyonundan mineli ve murassa eserler. [Exhibition catalogue]. The "Jewel" exhibition, which has been organised this year on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Sadberk Hanim Museum, presents enamelled and jewelled objects in the Turkish-Islamic Section of the museum. The exhibits reflect Ottoman tastes in objects set with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and other precious stones, and exquisitely crafted enamelled artefacts. They include objects for a wide variety of uses, such as belt buckles, writing boxes, pen cases, spoons, coffee cup holders, mastic jars, sherbet cups, pocket watches, fans, fly whisks, tobacco pipes, snuff boxes, brooches, Ottoman decorations and slippers. Throughout history glittering gold and silver objects studded with precious gems have been one of the most eye-catching manifestations of imperial splendour. Apart from the surviving jewelled objects themselves, archive documents, the writings of Ottoman authors and foreign travellers, contemporary paintings and miniatures demonstrate the extensive use of precious metals and gems to adorn items ranging from book bindings to costume in Ottoman culture. As in many Ottoman period arts and crafts, jewelled objects reveal a distinction between the work of court artists and ordinary craftsmen. Since the jewelled and enamelled objects in the Sadberk Hanim Museum collection tend to follow court tastes, most of them were evidently used and worn by people in or close to court circles. They display a wide diversity in terms of function, and although the majority date from the late Ottoman period, overall they cover a broad time span from the 17th century to the 20th century, and include some produced in Europe for the Ottoman market as well as those produced in the Ottoman Empire over this period. First Edition. TURKISH AND ISLAMIC ART Ottoman art Jewelery Gold Silver Diamond Collection Object Antique.

Kütahya: Sadberk Hanim Museum Kütahya Tiles and Ceramics Collection. The KÜTAHYA: Sadberk Hanim Museum's Kütahya Tile and Ceramic Collection Exhibition will be held at Sadberk Han?m Museum and remain open from 8 March until 25 November 2018. The exhibition encompasses Kütahya ware in all its wide diversity of form and decoration, and is accompanied by a comprehensive book on the subject. Curators of the exhibition are Hülya Bilgi and Idil Zanbak Vermeersch, who have also prepared the catalogue. The Ottoman period tiles and ceramics collection is one of the most important of the Sadberk Han?m Museum collections. It consists of ware made in potteries in Iznik, Kütahya and Çanakkale, which were the three main centres of Ottoman tile and ceramic art between the 15th and early 20th centuries; enabling the development of production over this period to be clearly understood. Organised as one of the major events on Sadberk Han?m Museum's programme for 2018, the exhibition presents examples of tiles and ceramics produced in Kütahya, where pottery has been made without interruption since antiquity and which in Ottoman times became the second most important source of tiles after Iznik. Sadberk Han?m Museum's Kütahya tile and ceramic collection is here exhibited chronologically and according to stylistic features. The exhibition is a reflection of production in Kütahya between the 18th and 20th centuries, during the Ottoman period. The diversity of the exhibits means that they throw light on both the artistic and technical aspects of Kütahya tile and ceramic production; tracing changes over time in decoration, form, and quality of the paste and glaze. Ceramic finds uncovered in the course of public infrastructure works in the city of Kütahya in 1979 demonstrated that production in Kütahya continued in parallel with that of Iznik. This ancient art managed to survive in Kütahya for centuries, from early Ottoman times onwards. Kütahya's master potters and tile makers maintained a high level of creativity and while styles changed throughout the period they continued to meet the needs of ordinary people for domestic ware, while at the same time producing tiles to embellish the walls of monumental buildings. Kütahya tiles and ceramics had long since found their way into museums and private collections in the 19th century, and today are increasingly sought after by collectors.

The Iznik ware in the exhibition comprises wall tiles and a wide range of vessels reflecting the socioeconomic status and tastes of their users produced at the Iznik potteries between the 15th and 17th centuries. Both tiles and vessels clearly illustrate the inexhaustible creativity of the artists, their richly vaired repertoire of decorative compositions, masterful use of colour, and constant search for technical innovation.".

Istanbul: Sadberk Hanim Muzesi, 2020. 4to., 474 p., color ills. In Turkish and English. Original binding. New 2700 ISBN: 9786059606165 CATALOG: Turkish & Islamic arts KEYWORDS: History of art Turkish art Islamic art Ottoman art Traditional arts In 2020, its 40th anniversary, Sadberk Hanim Museum is justly proud of its position as Turkey?s first private museum and aware of the responsibility that this entails. This significant anniversary is being celebrated by an inspiring exhibition and accompanying catalogue. The exhibition and publication project in this instance does not present a specific group of objects in the museum collections. Under the title ?Motif,? the panoramic diversity of every category is represented by bringing together historical motifs from different cultures that have encountered one another in very different regions. Up till now all of the museum?s exhibitions have focused on strong aspects of the museum?s collections. However, our anniversary project links objects together through their motifs, displaying the exceptional range of our relatively small yet outstanding museum. Motifs are the mainstays of works of art. The motifs of a novel, a story, a symphony or a folksong carry the work forward and bring it to life. The Latin word motivus encompasses several meanings: to set in motion, movement and flow. This project displays the historical depth, flow and cultural movement of the beautiful motifs on works of art in Sadberk Hanim Museum, both in the Archaeological Section and the Turkish-Islamic Section. In antiquity spinning motifs were used on coins that passed from hand to hand, while lamps illuminated cornucopias, vine branches and bunches of grapes that represented abundance and fertility. Garlands and acanthus motifs were introduced to Ottoman art. The rose (rh?don) featured on the coins of ancient Rhodes still conveys meaningful messages to us. Legendary creatures instilled fear but also gave protection; human figures on coins represented gods and rulers. The ancient lotus and palmette motif was applied to tile decoration by Ottoman artists. Motifs travelled back and forth along the caravan roads; much as today, for example, they wander the world on our clothes and bags. In the past motifs were passed down from master to apprentice and from older to younger generations, while now they gain new identities in the creative hands of designers. Our aim is to increase knowledge, arouse curiosity and share the beauty of 466 selected objects from the Sadberk Hanim Museum collection. These artefacts, each with a powerfully expressive aesthetic, represent nearly 500 motifs. Looking at these it becomes clear how closely connected Turkey is to both East and West, with Anatolia at its centre. The motifs have been divided into five main concepts, arranged from the general to the specific: Perception of the world and the universe (?Life and Power?); scenes of nature and the world of plants (?Nature?); images of human beings and animals in art (?Figurative Decoration?); expression in art of the principles governing a large and majestic system (?Order and Harmony?); and the ways in which people shape their surroundings (?Space?). One of the most important achievements of the project has been to give visibility to hundreds of motifs that might ordinarily escape attention. We invite visitors of every age and every occupation to establish an intellectual tie with what these historical motifs have to tell, and present a new visual palette and opportunity for intellectual exercise in relation to the world of art and forms. We developed this project in order to share the story of motifs with both art history and contemporary art circles, and to set the scene for a fresh look at many subjects, such as ?rules, inspiration and evocation in creativity? Drawing attent.

New ISBN: 9786059606318 CATALOG: Turkish & Islamic arts KEYWORDS: History of art Collection Embroidery Letter Leather Selected examples of the beautifully crafted letter and document wallets in the Sadberk Hanim Museum and Omer M. Koc collections can be seen at Sadberk Hanim Museum s latest exhibition. Hulya Bilgi is the curator of the exhibition and has also written the catalogue. Richly embroidered letter and document wallets produced from the late seventeenth century, principally for Western diplomats and merchants who travelled to the Ottoman Empire, exemplify the heights achieved by Ottoman leather workers and embroiderers. Noting the excellent quality of Turkish leather work, the 16th century French traveller and diplomat Pierre Belon commented, no one can sew leather as neatly as they do. The leather letter and document wallets that were viewed as symbols of prestige by many Europeans form an important category of Ottoman embroidery. These wallets embroidered with Ottoman motifs were produced by local craftsmen as souvenirs in major centres of diplomacy and trade like Istanbul and Izmir, and were particularly popular among the travellers, merchants and diplomats who visited these cities. The wallets they chose from among those ready-mades in the shops were then personalised according to the specifications of each customer, by embroidering them with the place, date, name of the purchaser and, if desired, a dedication. One of the most moving of these dedications, For my friend , inspired the title of this exhibition. These two diverse groups of of wallets formed independently of one another over time, as part of the Omer M. Koc and Sadberk Hanim Museum collections, have now been brought together at this exhibition for visitors to enjoy. The document wallets/diplomatic wallets that were mainly used by diplomats, high-ranking bureaucrats and military officers form a separate category distinguished by their large size, high quality materials, skilled craftsmanship, exquisite embroidered decoration and locks. From the dates, names and armorial devices embroidered on some of the wallets it is possible to identify the diplomats, bureaucrats or officers who owned them. For example, the coat of arms of Gravier de Vergennes Bourgogne is embroidered on the back of a document wallet dated 1774, from which we can surmise that it belonged to Charles Gravier, Count of Vergennes (1717-1787), who served as French ambassador extraordinary to Istanbul between 1755 and 1768, although the date on the wallet shows that he acquired it later. The exhibition consists of 91 wallets in all 76 letter wallets and 15 document wallets the earliest dating from 1669 and the latest from 1835. All have survived in excellent condition, bearing witness to the high standards achieved by Ottoman leather workers. The For my friend: Embroidered Letter and Document Wallets in the Sadberk Hanim Museum and Omer M. Koc Collections exhibited is curated by Hulya Bilgi and accompanied by an eponymous catalogue that is the most extensive study of these artefacts so far undertaken; giving a detailed account of these wallets. These two collections are constantly expanding, as new examples are acquired one by one from different countries. We are justly proud to have brought them back to Istanbul, which was the most important centre of production of these wallets, centuries after they were originally made. As the inscription For my friend shows, some were made as souvenirs of friendship and others used by merchants, military officers or ambassadors to carry official letters and documents safely.

The Iznik ware in the exhibition comprises wall tiles and a wide range of vessels reflecting the socioeconomic status and tastes of their users produced at the Iznik potteries between the 15th and 17th centuries. Both tiles and vessels clearly illustrate the inexhaustible creativity of the artists, their richly vaired repertoire of decorative compositions, masterful use of colour, and constant search for technical innovation.
