Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Carl Bodmer et al Ilustrador. 1st Edition. This is the complete set of The Journals of the Expedition Under the Command of Capts Lewis & Clarke, the government-ordered expedition (1804-1806) to cross the newly acquired western portion of the United States after the Louisiana Purchase. This edition was published by the Heritage Press in 1962. It is two volumes, 11.5" x 8", 231 pages and 547 pages--the two weigh 5 1/2 lbs. Both volumes are heavily illustrated and volume two includes a large fold-out copy of the original map. The books originally came in a slipcase, which I don't have. While there is some discoloration to the spines, and a few marks on the covers, there is no evidence that anyone ever read the books. They are in pristine condition.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Sehr gut. 243 p.: ill. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag etwas abgenutzt, sonst sehr guter Zustand / Dust jacket somewhat worn, otherwise in very good condition. - Nicholas Biddle (1786-1844) was a noted politician and financier in early nineteenthcentury America. At eighteen, he went to Europe as the secretary of the American minister to France. He also made the acquaintance of James Monroe when Monroe was the American ambassador to London. He was later elected to the state legislature and senate of Pennsylvania. Ultimately he became a director and then the president of the Bank of the United States. In the course of a sojourn to Europe, Biddle sailed to Greece, then a part of the Ottoman Empire. Half of the journal he kept on the trip has only recently been discovered, and the other half is known to only a few people because it is still in private hands. Taken together, these two journals (plus the four extant letters that Biddle wrote to his family in Philadelphia) are a mine of information about the formative influences on his career, about the politics and personalities of Napoleons Europe, about the condition of Greece and its ancient monuments under the Turkocratia, and even about the American naval war against the Barbary pirates. Despite being written by a twenty-year-old, these journals are remarkable for their literary quality and their general liveliness. Perhaps because they were not written to be published, they have a freshness and honesty lacking in more formal works of travel. McNeals extensive introduction illuminates the early nineteenth-century background of Biddles journals.
