Morning and Evening Series. Edinburgh : O…liphant, Anderson and Ferrier, 1881. 8vo. 8 volumes complete (Vol. 1 Antediluvians and Patriarchs; Vol. 2 Moses and The Judges; Vol. 3 Samuel, Saul and David; Vol. 4 Job and The Poetical Books; Vol. 5 Solomon and The Kings; Vol. 6 Isaiah and The Prophets; Vol. 7 Life and Death of Our Lord; Vol. 8 The Apostles and Early Church.) New blue endpapers for all volumes. Contents clean, crisp and unmarked apart from some typical brown spotting on the titlepages and tissue guards. A great resource for teaching and preaching! Few writings if any in modern times have contributed more to the elucidation of those parts of Scripture which relate to Oriental scenes and customs, and to popularize those biblical illustrations which were known only to the learned. No Scripture teacher in the Sabbath-school, Bible class, or in the pulpit should be without it. - Sword & the Trowel (1886). "!What marvellous expositions! The man who shall study [these] volumes thoroughly, will not fail to read his Bible intelligently with growing interest." - C.H. Spurgeon.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. RAMSEY, JAMES B., D.D. (1814-1871) Biblical scholar, missionary and pastor. The Spiritual Kingdom : An Exposition of the First Eleven Chapters of the Book of Revelation. Richmond, VA : Presbyterian Board of Publication, 1873. 8vo. First edition. 518 pp. Original brown clot…h cover with gilt title on spine, rather faded and a little rubbed. But binding is strong. Original brown endpapers, clean and unmarked as are the contents which are crisp and unmarked. A nice copy of this uncommon first edition. An incomplete commentary by an 'unknown' author on a book which has already had so many expositors may seem a surprising addition to the Geneva Series. As publishers our prejudice against an incomplete commentary was overcome by the sheer worth of these pages. - Banner of Truth. "Though only extending to chapter eleven, this work is particularly rich and helpful to preachers in its subjective, spiritual, pastoral application of the letters and worship chapters. In this area it is better than other commentaries. It is much less useful than others in resolving the eschatalogical aspects of revelation. . . ." - Peter Masters. "This 19th Century exposition is pastoral. Charles Hodge in the introduction says 'To a greater degree than any commentary within the writer's knowledge, this volume is adapted to spiritual edification. The leading characteristics of these lectures is their spirituality . . . No believer can read it without finding himself a better Christian, nor can he fail to be made wiser'. Ramsey neither adds to, nor subtracts from, the words of the Book. He is reverent with this Revelation." - J.P. Green, Snr. Additional postage required for overseas.

Donaldson was headmaster at nearby King Edward's School, Bury St Edmunds, between 1841 and 1855. (The ODNB states that he was 'active in the cultural life of Bury St Edmunds, where he greatly improved the Athenaeum'.) The document simply begins: 'That Hercules was the husband & not the purchased slave of Omphale appears from the following reasons.' Four numbered 'reasons' follow, covering twenty-four lines. The last reads: '(4) The spirit of the fable or allegory presumes that Hercules was the husand of Omphale i.e. that Strength allied itself to Beauty, & yielded to the gentle influence of the fair sex: this is the view taken by Propertius, II, 9 (11), 17.' Philosopher Paul Holmer's copy with his signature in ink on the front endpaper. As an independent biblical scholar, Murdock's purpose in this overview was to bring deve…lopments in European philosophy to American clergy trying to find its relevance to their theologies. In a prescient 20 page chapter on 'American Transcendentalism Murdock, in a highly critical somewhat sarcastic review, attributes the emergence of this movement, to the dissatisfaction of the Unitarian clergy with their own theology (true). But Transcendentalism (1830-1860) had yet to exert its impact on the larger American culture with Emerson's defining lecture (1842) and editorship of the DIAL ; Margaret Fuller's "Women in the 19th Century" (1845), and Thoreau's Walden (1854). A glimpse into the intellectual climate of the times.

He begfo=ins by reporting on the health issues and treatment of a pupil returning to his family home, detailing his good conduct 'both public and private', and noting his tring to curb his 'excitability of te…mper'. The boy's 'private tutor' has noted improvement. He then mentions an order form (no longer enclosed) from "Dr. Wordsworth (Headmaster) by which the parent could choose to give invitations to boys in families resident in the neighbourhood who they would wish their boy to be on "terms of visiting intimacy" and whether they would like to be consulted. He continues, "The plans for the new Boarding House are nearly completed; & I trust it will appear that we have introduced in them very satisfactory precautions against the recurrence of such a calamity [Headmaster's house on fire? See Note bel;ow] as we have this term suffered [Subscription and signature]." Note: A. "In 1838, Harrow School underwent significant changes, most notably the destruction of the Head Master's house by fire and the construction of a separate school chapel by C.R. Cockerell, departing from the previous use of St Mary's Church. This period marked a transition for the school, setting the stage for major growth and infrastructure development in the mid-19th century." [AI] B. "Family financial problems meant that Colenso had to take a job as an usher in a private school before he could attend university. These earnings and a loan of £30 raised by his relatives paid for his first year at St John's College, Cambridge where he was a sizar.[1] Showing talent in mathematics, in 1836 he was Second Wrangler and Smith's Prizeman at the University of Cambridge, and in 1837 he became a fellow of St John's.[1] Two years later [less re. the date of this letter] he went to Harrow School as mathematical tutor, but the step proved an unfortunate one. The school was at its lowest ebb, and Colenso not only had few pupils, but lost most of his property in a fire." [Wikipedia].
