The first printed edition of the first grammar of High Tamil, never published alongside Constanzo Beschi's groundbreaking Grammatica Latino-tamulica of 1738, his grammar of 'Low' Tamil. The manuscript was in Latin, as were most of the language texts produced by the Dutch missionaries at Tranquebar, but has been translated here into English by Benjamin Guy Babington (1794-1866) for its first printing. Babington is better known for his later contributions to epidemiology, but was working for the Government at Madras when he translated and published this work. Constantine Joseph Beschi (1680-1747), an Italian Jesuit priest at the Madura Mission, was a pioneer of the study of Tamil and the first to pay attention to the rich landscape of Tamil literature, rather than simply knowing the language to help spread the word of God, and his corpus of translations underpin the history of modern Tamil poetry and prose. What makes this present work different to a typical grammar is that he extensively uses poetical verse as examples for his grammatical explanations, and is intended as a guide to translating Tamil literature as sympathetically as possible. Scarce, just 6 copies held in UK institutions (BL, Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh, RAS, Society of Antiquaries). First edition; 4to (31 x 23 cm); contemporary half calf, marbled boards, all edges speckled blue, rebacked with original spine laid down, boards rubbed, bookplate to pastedown, a very good copy; [ii], xii, v, 117 pp. Provenance: British & Foreign Bible Society (bookplate). …

8vo (125 x 208 mm). (8), 192 pp. With 4 folding charts. Contemporary speckled calf, spine restored to style and laid down, with title in gilt. First English edition of Beschi's grammar of colloquial (or "low") Tamil, first published in Latin by the Danish Missionary Press in 1738. This English translation by the German soldier and educator Christoph Horst (1761-1810) formed the subsequent basis for all following English-language attempts at a Tamil grammar. - Joseph Beschi (1680-1746) was a Jesuit missionary in India who arrived in 1710 and joined the Madurai Mission a year later. As was a common approach of Jesuit missionaries, who felt that acculturation helped to gain them followers, he immersed himself in local life and dressed as a Hindu ascetic. Beschi gained remarkable proficiency in Tamil and authored several works in the language, including "Tembavani", an epic poem on the life of St Joseph. - Beschi was the first European to compile a grammar of the colloquial form of Tamil, "kotuntamil", which earned him the title among his European contemporaries as the "Father of Tamil prose". Not everyone was in agreement, however: Benjamin Babington, whose translation of Beschi's grammar of high Tamil was published at Madras in 1822, scathingly asserted that "the English version of Beschi's low Tamil grammar" was "so badly executed as to be, in some parts, scarcely intelligible", but was forced to concede that while Latin editions were to be had readily and cheaply, English students of Tamil were only to be seen with Horst's translation. That Horst was a Lutheran missionary may have been a further spur to Babington's criticism. - Scattered ex-libris stamps; a few minor pencil notes. In good condition. - 1) Early ownership inscription of Charles A. Forbes to front free endpaper. 2) Ex-libris of Glasgow Public Libraries, with withdrawal stamp. - Vater/Jülg 513 & cf. 240. B. Babington, "Translator's Preface", in: A Grammar of the High Dialect of the Tamil Language, Termed Shen-Tamil (Madras, 1822), p. III.…
