In America the Goethe Bi~Centennial Foundation is sponsoring a new edition of Goethe's works, and a Goethe Festival is being held in Aspen, Colorado. One of New Directions' contributions to the Goethe celebration is this volume~an intimate portrait of Goethe the man and the world he lived in. Goethe was a fabulous character. His range of interests and his vitality were enormous; his life was exceptionally complete. Many of his ideas were far ahead of his time and are still influential today. And, of course, he ranks with Shakespeare and Dante as a giant of world literature. In Goethe's World, Berthold Biermann, journalist and lifelong student of Goethe, has brought together significant selections from the great man's own autobiographical writings, records of conversations left by people who knew him, and excerpts from letters and diaries of the period. Many of these documents have never before been translated into English. Together they present a unique biography of a genius and his environment~readable and entertaining, but accurate. Mr. Biermann has given particular attention to the Americans who knew Goethe or corresponded with him. Goethe's World is richly illustrated. There are reproductions of the best portraits of Goethe and of many of his friends, of his own drawings and of scenes in his life story. And Mr. Biermann has written introductions to each selection and prepared thumbnail bio raphies of the principal figures mentioned.
