Taschenbuch.

A bright and beautiful copy, restored and bound with dignity. USTC 6904937. Galileo Galilei drew on lifetime of observation and experimentation to write what would become one of the most famous banned books in history: Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, in which three invented characters debate whether the Sun rotates around the Earth, or the Earth, the Sun. The Italian mathematician and philosopher believed that the evidence of tides, ships, sunspots, and planets pointed toward a heliocentric solar system. Copernicus had reached the same conclusion a century before, but the findings of Galileo, who developed the most powerful telescope in Europe, gave weight to the theory. Galileo was treading on thin ice. A papal bull of 1515 had decreed that all books issued in Catholic lands had to be licensed by local Church officials before being printed, on pain of excommunication for the printer. Galileo's previous books had passed muster, but he had been formally rebuked for his heliocentricism in 1616, though the censure was mild enough that he believed he could publish again as long as he made it clear that these were mere theories. The position of the Church was that the Sun rotated around the Earth, and Galileo would not explicitly contradict the ruling power of Renaissance Europe. At first, things went well. The man who controlled the licensing of books in Rome was Father Niccolo Riccardi, who admired Galileo's work. Riccardi discussed the manuscript with Pope Urban VIII, who had also enjoyed the philosopher's previous writings. In June 1630 Riccardi gave Galileo a provisional license to publish with a few corrections to the text. Publication was delayed by plague, the death of Galileo's usual publisher, and Riccardi's decision to recall the manuscript and linger over the foreword and afterword. The book was approved by multiple censors and members of the Holy Office of the Inquisition, and printing was finally completed in February 1632. Galileo presented the first bound copy to his patron Grand Duke Ferdinando de Medici on February 22. The book quickly sold out in Florence. Delayed again by plague, Diologo did not make its way to Rome until the summer of that year. When it arrived, so did Galileo's troubles. Pope Urban was at a low point, facing fierce criticism for his failure to adequately defend the Catholic faith in the Thirty Years' War. Kept awake by stress and paranoia, he ordered that all the the birds in his gardens be killed so their song would not disturb his rest. Urban had no time to read Galileo's new book, but when advisors told him that it was both heretical and insulting toward himself, he was in no mood to take the matter lightly. A three-man committee concluded that "Galileo may have overstepped his instructions by asserting absolutely the Earth's motion and the Sun's immobility, thus deviating from hypothesis." The Pope summoned the elderly philosopher to Rome, then kept him waiting. Finally, in April 1633, Galileo was called in by the Holy Office of the Inquisition. Over the next three months he faced a series of interrogations, in which torture was threatened but never used, that forced him to dance dishonestly around his real opinions. He cl. …
