Includes the following essays: 'The Fountain Way' (1983), 'The Garden of returns' (1987), 'The Tuileries: a reinvented garden' (1990), 'The Park of Duisburg-Nord' (1991), 'A landscape slope: the rest area of Nîmes-Caissargues' (1992) and 'The new spirit of the place, or taming the heterogeneous' (1993). Five earlier essays, again translated by Stephen Bann, had appeared in a 1983 issue of the 'Journal of Garden History'.
