Travers's Mary Poppins books, interpreting them through the lenses of myth, folklore, and depth psychology. The author argues that the character of Mary Poppins is not merely a whimsical nanny but a powerful archetypal figure, a manifestation of the Great Mother or a nature goddess. The work traces the mythological patterns and esoteric traditions embedded in the narratives, connecting them to sources ranging from Zen Buddhism and Gurdjieff's teachings to classical mythology and folklore. It posits that the books are not simple children's stories but complex allegories about spiritual awakening and the integration of the conscious and unconscious mind. -- Contents: Who Is Pamela Travers?; Mary Poppins as a Children's Book; The Mythical Method; The Ascension of Mary Poppins; The Festival of Creation; The Child and the Life of Nature; Fairy-Tale and Reality; Notes; Bibliography; Illustrations; Acknowledgements -- "Explores several aspects of the Mary Poppins books: their genre and influences from other children's books; their relationship to myth (in particular, in the use of such themes as Ascension, the Great Chain of Being, and the Cosmic Dance); their romantic concept of the child; and their presentation of an ambiguous relation between fiction and reality. This stimulating and well-balanced monograph also includes an excellent photograph of P.L. Travers and illustrations showing some of the parallels between mythological concepts and the Mary Poppins books.".…
