Die Lepra is Dr. Adolf v. Bergmann's 1897 monograph on leprosy, issued as Lieferung 10b within the monumental Deutsche Chirurgie series - a comprehensive, multi-part German surgical encyclopedia founded by Theodor Billroth and A. Luecke and edited by E. v. Bergmann and P. Bruns, with contributions from a remarkable roster of leading German, Austrian, and Swiss surgeons and specialists of the day (a full list of contributors, including figures such as Kocher, Küster, and Mikulicz, appears on the half-title page). Bergmann, who directed both the surgical department of the City Hospital of Riga and its associated leprosarium, brings direct clinical authority to the subject, and the table of contents shows the work covers the geographic distribution and history of leprosy worldwide, its etiology (including transmission, heredity, and the notable "Keanu" inoculation case from Hawaii), incubation and prodromal symptoms, and the pathological anatomy of the disease down to the leprosy bacillus itself - reflecting the state of medical understanding of leprosy at the close of the nineteenth century, illustrated with one chromolithographic plate and six black-and-white plates. Condition & Binding: This is a hardcover volume with a half-leather/quarter-leather binding: a burgundy leather spine label area with gilt title lettering ("DIE LEPRA / BERGMANN") over cloth-covered boards in a warm reddish-brown tone, with an old paper spine label reading "78 D 40" affixed near the head and foot, likely a former library or personal collection shelf-mark. The spine gilt remains clearly legible. The cloth boards show light overall wear with a few scattered small marks, and the corners show light bumping consistent with age and handling. The text block is tight and complete, with light overall toning to the pages and the front matter showing the Kanthack bookplate and Cambridge Pathological Laboratory stamp described above, along with a small pencil shelf-mark ("46.A") and additional pencil/ink call numbers ("18.C.32," "57.G.9," "78.D.40") on the title page, indicating the book moved through at least one institutional cataloguing system after its initial private ownership. Overall- very good.…
