No Binding. Condición: Very Good. Antique copper engraving circa 1750 measuring 9.67" x 17". The city was taken by the French (1747) during the War of the Austrian Succession. Perspective views, or "optical views" were popular in the eighteenth century and when viewed through a n optical device called a zograscope, they had an appearance of three-dimensional depth. if the zograscope had a lens only, the print had to be held vertically for viewing, and it was frequently attached to stiff backing. If it had a lens and a mirror, the print could lie flat on the table, but would be seen as a mirror image. For this reason, many perspective prints had a title printed in reverse at the top of the image. Many had strong coloring that looked appealing when viewed in low light. A fresh clean engraving with just a little marginal dusting and a few spots on the back.

Folio, 325 x 195 mm. 6 pages, versos only with title and brief description on two pages and two detailed hand coloured sections. This bitter siege ended with the French taking the fortress which led to a cascade of captures of minor forts outside the city. According to this account "the French took it in 1747, but it is thought, not without treachery" although other accounts state that the French managed to seize a sally port from which they were able to enter the city.

Thomas Willeboirts, known as Bosschaert, was a pupil of Gerard Seghers and probably also of Anthony van Dyck (whose late work was strongly influential on his oeuvre). Amongst his patrons was the Statthalter, Prince Friedrich Heinrich of Oranien-Nassau and later his widow, Amalia zu Solms. In 1651 the artist was elected dean of the St. Lucas Guild in Antwerp. His oeuvre is characterised by the sculptural nature of his figures.
