"In ancient and premodern societies from archaic Greece and imperial Rome, through the Middle Ages up to Reformed Northern Europe - most homes contained at least some select objects with a religious or ritual significance. Such objects, with a variable… degree of sacrality, would range from altars, household shrines, and statuettes of divinities to incense burners, relics, pendants, rosaries and religious imagery of gods and saints represented on wall paintings, decorative tiles, textiles, furniture or everyday utensils, and even substances contained in the 'consecrated' vases, such as incense, salt, honey, water and wine. Such objects differed from the most venerated sacred cult items safeguarded in temples and churches, and seen only during certain ceremonies: domestic cult objects may have been seen, touched and used on an every-day basis. Inhabitants, visitors, servants, and slaves of the households therefore had a close, physical - and arguably more direct, personal and emotive - relationship with these objects with which they shared the living space and with which they were in daily interaction, than with the objects of the official cult. In domestic space, holy and everyday activities and objects mingled and were closely interwoven, to such an extent that it is impossible to distinguish the borders between the 'sacred' and the 'profane'." Soft cover. Condición: New. 164 pages : ill. ; 30 cm. The excavation of Ficana zona 6b, on the flat plateau on top of the hill of Monte Cugno, Acilia, was carried out over the years 1978-1981. Zona 6b was located outside the Archaic earth-wall and to the west of the main excavation zones on the eastern slope and was chosen in or…der to study the extension, development and chronology of the settlement and its relationship to the zones inside the Iron Age agger. The catalogue of the finds is organised in three main groups: the minor objects and fine and coarse pottery. The minor objects include all finds other than pottery; those made of terracotta form the majority of non-metal finds, while those of stone, bone and glass are few in number. Metal objects are further divided into those in bronze, and iron or lead. The pottery is divided in two parts, in which the material is presented according to the quality, coarseness and colour of the clay.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Among the perspectives that the scientific exploration of Pompei has opened to research and beyond, the study of feminineness plays a major role. Until the discovery of the Vesuvian cities, people's idea of daily life in the ancient world was conditioned to a very large extent by texts. Text…s that in almost all cases were written by men, who belonged to a small elite of people who could devote themselves to study and otium, with a few exceptions of writers from the middle and lower classes and very few women who left literary records. The discovery of a city with its spaces, but also with furniture, furnishings, and findings such as precisely mirrors and other objects associated with the mundus muliebris, have expanded the limited gaze of the literary tradition. To give an example of how this knowledge has transcended even the con purposes of the antiquarian disciplines, consider fashion: the "Greek" fashion which after the "tyranny" of the corset in the 18th century liberated the female body from clothing that literally constrained it, is inspired by the archaeological discoveries of the time and a new interest in deriving knowledge and inspiration from them to complementing what was being learned from reading the authors classics. Even today, that "other Pompeii," or the Pompeii that speaks of the many aspects marginalized or completely obscured in the literary sources, is a mine of data and knowledge which scientific and museological-didactic valorization is far from being completed. While much remains to be done in terms of research and valorization of this heritage, this work is certainly an important step in this direction, as it skillfully combines philological analysis of specific contexts and objects with more general historical-archaeological reflections. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
