Some material is therefore repeated, in a slightly amended form, for the benefit of new readers, and for ease of reference. Phase 2 sees the completion of this project, which started in a modest way in 1980, recording surviving mileposts and milestones in the Taunton area. This initial trial proved encouraging, and the work expanded to cover the western part of the present County of Somerset, the results being published as Phase 1 in 1985 after nearly 5 years of work, carried out with increasing speed and efficiency. The impetus did not slacken, and in spite of the greater travelling distances from our centre at Taunton, eastern Somerset has been covered in half the time. Members of Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society surveyed routes of the former Taunton Turnpike Trust, and their work revealed a wide variety of wayside features as well as posing questions relating to the history and management of the roads themselves. In subsequent years, the authors have refined early recording techniques, and by combining fieldwork with historical research, have produced the present monograph. As far as is known, information in this format about roads is unique both locally and nationally, but it is inevitable that any innovative approach must have its shortcomings, especially as it involves the study of over 130 separate lengths o.
