Who is "Coningsby" Where is "The Moonstone"? When does one need "A Room of One's OWn"? Why is it that "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit"? And just how "good" is the British novel? These are just a few of the questions answered in "The Columbia History of the British Novel". John Richetti's comprehensive history takes us from the birth of th novel in the 18th century through its social & culture-conscious growing pains in the 19th century to its angts-ridden maturity in the 20th century. Concise, cohesive, & complementary to any collection of must-read classics, "The Columbia History of the British Novel" challenges & enlightens us by examining canonical writers as well as women & post-colonial novelists. Discover the origins of the novel in the "scandalous" books of Aphra Behn, Eliza Haywood, & Delarivier Manley ,& follow its development through Samuel Richardson, Henry Fielding, & Laurence Sterne against the backdrop of the novel's meteoric rise in the 1700s. Follow Frances Burney & the rise of the woman novelist, & the Gothic novel as invented by Horace Walpole & perfected by Mary Shelley & Matthew Lewis. Remember remarkable reunions in Jane Austen; the bond between chivalry, Waverly, & Sir Walter Scott; the Brontes, Amelia Opie, Maria Edgeworth, & the tradition of Romantic women's fiction; Charles Dickens & the professionalization of literature; George Eliot & the novel of ideas; and Wilkie Collins & the sensation-mania of the 1860s. Continue through the 19th-century w/ the "Condition of England" novels of Benjamin Disraeli & Elizabeth Gaskell, Hardy's tales of class & sexual difference, & Anglo-Indian perspectives on the empire from Rudyard Kipling & Philip Meadows Taylor. Enter the 20th-centry & examine the modern novel w/ Joseph Conrad, James Joyce, & Virgina Woolf. Then trace the anti-modernist movement w/ Kingsley Amis, C.P. Snow, & Angus Wilson &, finally, keep up w/ contemporaries--Doris Lessing, A. S. Byatt, Anita Brookner, Julian Barnes, Kazuo Ishiguro, & Jeanette Winterson. "The Columbia History of the British Novel" lets us do all these tings as it presents literary critics: (a) Toni Bowers on ealy amatory fiction, (b) James Thompson on Jane Austen, (c) Ian Ferris on William Thackery, (d) David Trotter on Arnold Bennett, George Moore, & George Gissing, (e) Michael Gorra on colonial & postcolonial novels from Rudyard Kipling to Salmon Rushdie, (f) Michael Seidel on James Joyce, (g) Carol McGuirk on postwar feminisms from Margaret Drabble to Angela Carter. "The Columbia History of the British Novel" examines classics in light of the critical theories of Bakhtin, Lukacs, & Foucault, among others, as well as a panoply of such sub-genres as picaresque fiction, adventures, travelogues, utopian & dystopian prose, historical romances, detective novels, and "Bildungsroman". This superb history also includes brief biographies of novelists discussed & lists of further reading. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee & due to its weight to all international destinations via efficient USPS PRIORTY MAIL at our posted rates.

Añadir al carritoSoftbound. Condición: Very Good. Small broadsheet newspaper, 8 pp. with a center crease, one b/w photo and four political cartoons A radical left-wing newspaper that critiqued the Jewish community without demonizing it. Anti-Fatah and probably influenced by Shomer Ha-Tzair. With an article by Albert Memmi and a poem by Julia Vinograd. Cover is illustrated with a large drawing by Madeline Rosenstein. "This paper is being edited by a group of radicals who are concerned with the tendencies of our radical friends' positions on the Middle East situation. Within the United States our group consists of members of SDS, The Resistance, and the Peace and Freedom Party, etc. This group is completely unorganized ; we came to know each other through the common ties of the radical nature of our political ideology and our deep concern for social justice. We recognized that it was no quirk of fate that our Jewish backgrounds gave support to these two related viewpoints. It is in this sense that we feel a deep commitment to Jewish thought. Now to the raison d' etre of the paper. As mentioned earlier, one of the reasons that so many of us came together to start this paper, was a growing concern with our radical communities' increasingly anti-Israel posture. As radicals we find this inappropriate, at best. We believe that the easy acceptance of empty metaphors and lack of desire to make meaningful distinctions between vague analogies concerning the Middle East does irreparable damage to the morality of the movement."--taken from "Our Raison d' Etre", page [1], Vol. 1, no. 1 (January [1969]).
