Poor condition. i-x, 11-316 pages. Hardcover; H 18.75cm x L 12.5cm. Decorative binding - original full red leather with elaborate gilt stamping upon spine and boards; staining and soiling to boards, spine gilt faded with tear at small surface loss at heel, scuffing along joints, board edges abraded with strong wear to corners. F…ront hinge completely cracked so that front board and spine while still attached to one another are separated from the backstrip. All edges gilt but dulled. Missing front and rear free endpapers and flyleaves; several quires pulled; pages 243-250 missing (thus lacks the conclusion of "The Treasure Seeker" by Mrs. E.S. Swift, "A Sonnet" by Mary Spencer Pease," and the beginning of "The Belle of the Boarding School" by Calvin Henderson Wiley). Also lacks two plates opposite pages 13 and 247. Some foxing and moisture staining throughout; pencil notes on page 11; ink calculation on front pastedown; occasional other pencil marks; erasure of pencil note at center of page 316 has caused strong abrasion and closed tear. Harvard University online library catalogue cites W.H. Benade as editor. An anthology of mid-19th century poetry and short stories with examples of the latter being "An Up-town Crisis" by N.P. Willis, "The Crevasse, or the Widow Morel" by E.B. Gardette, M.D., "First Love" by Miss C.M. Sedgwick, "The Three Calls" by H.J. Jones, "The Countess. A Romance" by Mrs. C.H. Butler, "The Prophet of Ionia" by Lydia Maria Child, etc. Poetry examples include "Theodora" by Edith May, "Newport Beach" by Henry T. Tuckerman, "Woman's Love" by Richard H. Stoddard, "Our Beautiful Dead" by Ann S. Stephens, "To Hope. A Sonnet" by George H. Boker, "She Came and Went" by James Russell Lowell, "Cathara" by Walter Colton, etc. Also present is an essay titled "English and American Manners" by Mrs. Caroline Matilda Kirkland. Laid-in is a single advertising leaf (presumably from a contemporary mid-19th century pamphlet) for a diphtheria treatment and lozenges by Lowell, Massachusetts apothecary Carleton & Hovey. Poor condition but still an interesting example of an uncommon nineteenth century gift book.
