In 26 subsequent chapters the book covers the widest possible spectrum of development of a pioneering village through to it gaining city status in 1963 and continuing to centennial year, 1982. Chapter topics include civic services and amenities, education and religion, sports and the arts, health services and law and order, education, the development of the Port of Tauranga, transport services and a section on pioneer settlers. 296 pages including chronology, illustrations list and index. Illustrated throughout with b/w photos, some art, documernt reproductions, e/paper maps and several other maps, card covers carry a wrapround sketch by Anne Hyde of the Tauranga waterfront commercial area in 1879.
