Hardcover. Condición: Poor. 3rd Edition. The first printing to include the note on Sherlock Holmes by Dr. Joseph Bell who inspired the character. In one quarter cloth binding with scarlet cloth to spine and overlap with gilt to titling and beige cloth covered boards with red type. Corners are bumped and rubbed through exposing boards at same. Gilt to top page ends. Soiling to boards with spots and rings. Front spine crease has a 1 1/4 inch split at top that has possibly been reglued and a 1 inch split towards bottom. The rear spine crease has a 4 inch split from bottom up. Fraying/cloth loss to spine ends with tanning to spine and some spotting and stains, especially at bottom of spine onto front board. Illustrated endpapers which are split at front with ffep separated two-thirds up from bottom. Some flaking with mull exposed, but some likely adhesive reinforcement as holding strong. Vintage bookplate to front pastedown and previous owner's name stamp to ffep and page following. Likely some adhesive reinforcement of frontispiece and title page as well. Rear endpapers affixed towards gutter, but text block split halfway up from page preceding and loose. Obviously reglued at some point. A handful of other partial splits to text block throughout and a small chip to front edge of one page. Some stray marks and smudges to text block, but not excessive. Spine cocked. 5th Printing.…
