Beekman, an African American, was a dentist in Brooklyn (graduating from the New York Dental School in 1902) and also a sometime President of the local chapter of the NAACP. His address was a brief view of the history of the New York African Society for Mutual Relief since its formal organization in 1808 including brief mention of its involvement in the Underground Railroad and information by name and trades of several of its most illustrious members. The end date for this Society seems unclear -- some online information has 1945 as an end date but Beekman refers to it as an ongoing society in this 1946 address and organizational records seem to exist up to the late 1940s or possibly the early 1950s.…
