From Preface - The tragedy of Vietnam hangs over the world like a persistent fever or a hacking cough which will not go away. It is a disturbing reminder of the impact of violence, conflict, hate, and fear on the human scene. The escalation of military activity in Vietnam during the past 18 months has caused a corresponding upward leap in the number of refugees and in the number of civilian and military casualties. Weariness and despair have increase proportionately. "Is this little country of ours appointed the world's permanent war land?" asks a Vietnamese friend. The people of this country are caught in a tragic combination of historical, geographic, political, and military forces; their sufferings and their needs are great. This book is about the people of Vietnam, their hopes and their hurts, their struggles and their fears and their efforts to meet life under circumstances which they cannot understand nor control. Goshen College graduates Atlee '35 and Winifred Beechy '38 returned to the campus in 1949 where they worked for the next 34 years, dedicating their lives to counseling and educating students within the broader context of promoting peace and justice in our communities, our nation and our world. Atlee served as dean of students, director of counseling services and professor of education, psychology and peace studies. Winifred was a teacher, writer, coordinator of peace and social concerns for the Mennonite Church. They traveled to dozens of countries in the interest of international education, relief work and peace and justice concerns. The Vietnam War (1 November 1955 30 April 1975) was an armed conflict in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia fought between North Vietnam (Democratic Republic of Vietnam) and South Vietnam (Republic of Vietnam) and their allies. North Vietnam was supported by the Soviet Union and China, while South Vietnam was supported by the United States and other anti-communist nations. The conflict was the second of the Indochina wars and a proxy war of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and US. The Vietnam War was one of the postcolonial wars of national liberation, a theater in the Cold War, and a civil war, with civil warfare a defining feature from the outset. Direct US military involvement escalated from 1965 until its withdrawal in 1973. The fighting spilled into the Laotian and Cambodian Civil Wars, which ended with all three countries becoming communist in 1975. Presumed First Edition, Presumed First Printing.
