The topic of spirituality and health is well established in science and society in the USA and is becoming increasingly significant in Europe as well. The difficulty of finding a consistent and practicable definition of spirituality is one main reason why there are reservations in the area of empirical sciences about including spiritual aspects in health research. As an increasing number of studies show, religiousness and spirituality represent an important resource for many people coping with illness.
