Color frontispiece tipped in. Illustrated with eight plates (including two folding). Designed and printed at the Arion Press, San Francisco. Letterpress on Mohawk Superfine paper. Foreword by John Haskell Kembell. The packet ship Apollo, built in 1831, was purchased in 1848 by Moses Yale Beach, the father of the keeper of this journal, Joseph Perkins Beach. She sailed around the horn in 1849, loaded with mining implements other goods to be sold at Gold Rush prices in San Francisco. Abandoned by her crew on landing, Apollo was beached, shorn of her masts, and used as a storehouse, offices and a coffeehouse, before being destroyed by fire in 1851. This is the first definitive biography of a member of the "Gold Rush Fleet". (BCC #183; Kurutz 44). As New copy in the original glassine wrapper. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Collectible-Very Good. Cloth. Dust wrapper. Illustrations. 550 copies printed by Andrew Hoyem. In the Foreword mention is made of the number of journals kept by those travelling from the East coast to California; some journals were maintained for the entire trip, others o nly for a short time, but they reflected "the personality, interests, and experiences of the writer". Joseph Perkins Beach's Cape Horn journal has elements of significance. His "father owned the ship and that he served as supercargo and captain's cl erk placed him in an important position aboard Apollo". "Since Beach was responsible in part for the sale of the cargo after Apollo reached San Francisco, his account of the last months of 1849 when the cargo was being landed and disposed of is part icularly interesting".
