Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. George Bernard Shaw - The Complete Plays and Prefaces SHAW, George Bernard. The Complete Plays of Bernard Shaw. London: Constable and Company Limited, 1931. [&] Prefaces by Bernard Shaw. London: Constable and Company Limited, 1934. First editions. Two large octavo volumes (9 5/8 x 6 3/4 inches; 245 x 172 mm.). [vi], [1]-1131, [1, blank]; viii, 802 pp. Handsomely bound by Bayntun of Bath ca. 1960 in three-quarter red morocco over red cloth boards ruled in gilt, spines with five raised bands decoratively ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Inner hinges of Plays cracked but sound, spines uniformly slightly faded. A near fine and attractive set. Bringing together the dramatic achievements of George Bernard Shaw, this two-volume set represents one of the most comprehensive early collected editions of his work, pairing the plays themselves with the author's famously expansive and incisive prefaces. Shaw's prefaces - often as substantial and provocative as the plays - serve as manifestos on drama, politics, religion, and society, illuminating the intellectual framework behind works that helped redefine modern theater. From biting social satire to philosophical debate, Shaw's plays challenged Victorian and Edwardian conventions with wit and audacity, securing his position as one of the central figures of modern drama and earning him the Nobel Prize in Literature. Together, the plays and prefaces offer not merely a collected works, but a unified statement of Shaw's dramatic and intellectual vision.…

Añadir al carritoThe Classic Life - Boswell's Johnson in an Elegant Bayntun-Rivière Binding The Life of Samuel Johnson BOSWELL, James. The Life of Samuel Johnson. Newly edited with notes by Roger Ingpen. London: Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons, 1907. Two quarto volumes (9 1/4 x 7 1/8 inches; 235 x 181 mm.). xxxii, 576; xvi, 577-1172 pp. Twelve inserted photogravure plates. Profusely illustrated throughout with portraits, views, and maps. Handsomely bound ca. 1940 by Bayntun-Rivière in three-quarter brown morocco over tan cloth boards, covers ruled in gilt, spines with five raised bands, elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Spines lightly and attractively mellowed. A fine, well-preserved set. First published in 1791, Boswell's Life of Johnson remains one of the greatest biographies in the English language - remarkable for its immediacy, anecdotal richness, and the vivid reconstruction of the personality of Samuel Johnson. Boswell's method - built on diaries, conversations, and firsthand observation - effectively created the modern art of literary biography. The 1907 Ingpen edition is among the more desirable early 20th-century scholarly printings, offering a carefully edited text enriched with notes and a generous illustrative program, including photogravures that lend the work a distinctly Edwardian bibliophilic appeal. The present set is elevated considerably by its later binding by Bayntun-Rivière of Bath, one of the most respected English binderies of the 20th century, known for combining traditional craftsmanship with restrained elegance - an ideal treatment for a canonical literary text. …

Añadir al carritoClarendon's Monumental History of the English Civil War Extra-Illustrated with 224 Engraved Portraits Eight Volumes Handsomely Bound by Bayntun CLARENDON, Edward Hyde, Earl of. The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England. To Which is Added an Historical View of the Affairs of Ireland. A New Edition, Exhibiting a Faithful Collation of the Original MS., with All the Suppressed Passages; Also the Unpublished Notes of Bishop Warburton. Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1826. Eight octavo volumes (8 1/2 x 5 3/8 inches; 217 x 134 mm.). A remarkable extra-illustrated set, greatly enlarged by the insertion of 224 engraved portraits of monarchs, statesmen, soldiers, churchmen, courtiers, and other historical figures associated with Clarendon's narrative, many of the portraits inlaid or mounted to size. The extensive series of added portraits includes representations of many of the principal personalities of Tudor and Stuart England and of the Civil War period, among them Mary, Queen of Scots; Henry VIII; Edward IV; James I; William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke; Sir Thomas Coventry, Lord Keeper; and Francis Russell, Earl of Bedford. The portraits comprise engravings of various periods and sizes, selected from numerous sources and carefully incorporated into the volumes, transforming the set into an extensive pictorial gallery of the personalities surrounding the English Civil Wars. Handsomely bound by Bayntun of Bath, ca. 1910, in three-quarter brown crushed morocco over brown cloth boards, ruled in gilt; spines with five raised bands, decoratively ruled and tooled in gilt in compartments, lettered in gilt, with volume numbers and "EXTRA ILLUSTRATED / 1826" at foot; marbled endpapers; top edges gilt. Some light rubbing and minor wear to extremities, but an attractive and imposing set. Edward HYDE, first Earl of Clarendon (1609-1674) was one of the principal royalist statesmen of the seventeenth century. A close adviser to Charles I and subsequently to the future Charles II during his exile, Hyde returned to England at the Restoration and served as Lord Chancellor until his political downfall in 1667. He spent his remaining years in France, where he continued work upon the history for which he is chiefly remembered. Clarendon's History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England, first published at Oxford in 1702-1704, remains one of the great contemporary accounts of the English Civil War. Written by a participant who knew many of its leading personalities personally, the work combines political and historical narrative with the penetrating character studies for which Clarendon became celebrated. The present 1826 Clarendon Press edition is of particular importance for restoring material absent from the early editions. As its title announces, it was prepared from a collation with the original manuscript and incorporates suppressed passages together with the previously unpublished notes of Bishop William Warburton. The extra-illustration of books - sometimes known as "Grangerizing" - reached its greatest popularity among nineteenth- and early twentieth-century collectors, who expanded important historical and biographical works by inserting portraits, views, documents, and other material relating to the text. Particularly ambitious examples could require rebinding in several volumes to accommodate the added material. With no fewer than 224 additional engraved portraits distributed throughout its eight volumes, the present copy is an unusually extensive example of the practice. The portraits materially enhance Clarendon's celebrated character studies, turning his history into both a narrative of the Civil War and a substantial visual record of the men and women who inhabited its political world. A handsome, extensively extra-illustrated copy of one of the great contemporary histories of seventeenth-century England, in an attractive eight-volume Bayntun binding.…

An excellent copy of this very rare color-plate book. A lively and highly important account of Georgian theatrical and musical life by "our great sea-song writer," whose patriotic songs - Tom Bowling, Poor Jack, and others - became synonymous with the British naval spirit during the Napoleonic era. More than a memoir, the work preserves the words of some 600 songs and offers a vivid, firsthand record of the late eighteenth-century stage. Particularly appealing are the sixty charming circular aquatint plates, delicately hand-colored and designed and etched by Miss Ann Dibdin, his daughter, a rare early example of female participation in English color-plate production. These small scenes of sailors, taverns, and domestic life - perfectly complement the tone of the songs and give the work a distinctive visual character. Rare: OCLC/RLIN locate just six copies in libraries and institutions worldwide: University of Illinois (IL, USA); University of Miami (FL, USA); Toronto Public Library, (ON, CA); British Library (UK); University of Aberdeen (Scotland); Bibliotheque Nationale de France (France). London: Printed by C. Hullmandel for Rodwell & Martin, ca. 1830. Small octavo (5 9/16 x 4 1/4 inches; 142 x 108 mm.). One hundred fine numbered hand colored lithograph plates with legends (including pictorial title-page) drawn on stone by George Scharf. Plates nos. 50 & 52 slightly shorter on lower blank margin. Handsomely bound ca. 1920 by Bayntun of Bath for C.E. Lauriat Co., Boston. Full dark red crushed morocco, covers with gilt-rule border, three gilt dots at corners, blind-tooled lances extending onto boards from raised bands. Spine with five raised bands decoratively paneled and lettered in gilt in compartments, decorative gilt board edges, gilt ruled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. The subjects include Joan of Arc, Bloody Mary, Queen of Scots, Ninon de Lenclos, many French kings and queens, courtiers, mistresses, soldiers, knights, politicians and admirals, from five centuries of French history. According to Hiler, these plates are reduced and reversed copies of those in [Hippolyte Lecomte's] Costumes Civils et Militaires de la Monarchie Française, which was first published in 1820 in four volumes. The present work was published as a single volume and in a smaller format by the renowned London-based printer and lithographer Charles Hullmandel (1789-1850). According to DNB, "Most of the major improvements made to lithography in Britain in the 1820s and 1830s can be attributed to Hullmandel, and in this period he was also the most prolific printer of pictorial lithographs in the country." In addition to earning his living through printing, Hullmandel also worked with scientists like Michael Faraday in search of new ways to perfect the art of lithography. Images for the present work were actually executed by Hullmandel's friend George Scharf (1788-1860), a Bavarian-born artist who was among the vanguard of lithographers operating in London.
