It contrasts the morale, equipment, strategy and tactics of the combatants, based in part on the fascinating material provided by the examination of top ranking Egyptian prisoners. The final section deals with developments in the eight months since the war. No such detailed analysis has hitherto been available, one which makes sense of the enormous variety of apparently unrelated incidents reported in the press. The authors make all too clear that the Middle East has become perhaps irreversibly a front in the Cold War.
