The supplement to Lincoln's Inn lawyer Joseph Bateman's (1797- 1863) The General Turnpike Road Act (London, 1822), comprising the three amended acts issued under the reign of George IV with additional material on the correct maintenance and repair of roads. Turnpike roads were those highways on which tollgates were placed to charge road-users in order to defray maintenance expenses. The collection of these tolls was overseen by numerous 'turnpike trusts', each established by an individual act of parliament.
