Hardcover. Condición: New. 184 pages. The letters of Sir Stamford Raffles to his sister, Mary Anne Flint, are preserved in the Raffles Family Collection in the British Library, London. They are among the most interesting of his private letters, containing primary information on Singapore during its early years as a British settlement, and on Bengkulu when Raffles was Lieutenant-Governor of Fort Marlborough in charge of the East India Company's settlements in west Sumatra. The letters reflect Raffles's deep affection for his sister, whose life was closely associated with his in Penang, Melaka, Java, Bengkulu, Singapore and London an association which continued with Lady Raffles, whose letters to her sister-in-law form Part Two of the book. The letters in this volume are annotated with incisive commentary by historian John Bastin, and complemented by images from the National Museum of Singapore and other key collections.

Hard bound. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: new. Reprint. The historical reputation of Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, owes more to his second wife, Sophia Raffles, than to any other person. After his death in 1826, she not only had erected in Westminster Abbey a life-size marble statue of him surmounting a pedestal detailing his notable achievements in Indonesia and Malaysia, but she also financed the publication in 1830 of her monumental Memoir of his life, which she had spent four years in writing. Published as a large quarto volume of nearly 850 pages, the book at once established Raffles's public reputation as one of the most liberal and enlightened of all British governors in the East. It was warmly praised by reviewers when it was first published, and it still remains the standard work, although now a very expensive one. Lady Raffles's Memoir traces Raffles's remarkable career from its humble beginnings as a junior clerk in the East India Company's offices in London, to his becoming Lieutenant-Governor of Java and its dependencies during the Napoleonic Wars, and of West Sumatra during 1818-24, when he founded Singapore and laid down the regulations for its government. Illustrated with four uncoloured aquatints of Java by William Daniell, a large folding uncoloured aquatint of Singapore (one of the earliest views of the settlement), four charts and maps, as well as other illustrations, this handsome volume is now reprinted with a long Introduction by John Bastin giving a detailed account of Lady Raffles's problems in writing the book, and of her negotiations with John Murray to have it published. This edition also contains the only known portrait of Lady Raffles, taken from a miniature executed in 1817 at the time of her marriage to Raffles. First published 1830, this high quality reprint is superior in all respects compared with more recent print-on-demand and south Asian editions. A new/unread copy. xxxiii, 723, 1 colour and 3 b&w plates, 3 maps, index. *** PLEASE NOTE : OVERSIZE BOOK - WILL REQUIRE EXTRA POSTAGE - PLEASE EMAIL FOR POSTAL CHARGES TO YOUR DESTINATION *** Size: 29 x 23 cm.
