Usually made from the latex of Rhus verniciflua, the lacquer tree, it has been described as the "most ancient industrial plastic know to man", and it has been in constant use in China for over three thousand years. It has inspired Chinese craftsmen to produce works of art that are almost unrivalled for their delicacy, variety and aesthetic appeal. Sir Harry Garner's important book is the first systematic study of this bafflingly complex study. The greater part of the book deals with lacquerwares that were made from the Yuan dynasty (1260-1368) onwards. Two full bibliographies separately listing the literature in Chinese and in European languages complete the book. Sir Harry Garner unique collection of lacquerwares from which the majority of the illustrations were taken was divided between the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.…
