Bartolomeo Ricci da Lugo was born in 1490 and died in 1569 in Ferrara, Italy, so this volume was published in his lifetime. He was mentor to Prince Alfonso d'Este and left several speeches and letters, together with a famous treatise on the stylistic imitation of the Latin classics, known as the 'Apparatus'. This book offered readers a tool to refine their knowledge of Latin, using exclusively classical examples and it was published following the favourable judgement of Pietro Bembo, the theorist of modern Italian. Both Bembo and Ricci thought that the purest Latin prose should imitate the style of Cicero, as closely as possible. Pagination: Title page, 3-736, [56]pp. Signatures: a to z then A to Z then Aa to Cc in gatherings of 8, Dd in gathering of 4. Provenance: House of Auersperg bookplate to the front paste down, signature for Johann Weikhard von Auersperg (1615-1677) to the title page. The Princely Auersperg's Fideikommissbibliothek in Laibach (Ljubljana) was one of the most important private nobility libraries in the Habsburg region. It was created by the mighty House of Auersperg (Counts and Princes of Turjak), included valuable incunabula and manuscripts, and later formed the foundation of today's Slovenian National Library. Prince Johann Weikhard of Auersperg (also spelled Johann Weichard von Auersperg) was Prime Minister of Austria and Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece. He was the first Prince of Auersperg, and also Imperial Prince of Tengen and Duke of Münsterberg. Approximately 6 ¾ inches (17cm) tall. Testo in latino in elegante carattere corsivo. First Edition (?) of this treatise on literary imitation. Renuard (122:3) cites an edition of 1541, but there is no trace of any copy in any library in the world as attested by the USTC records, Worldcate Edit 16. Bartolomeo Ricci was an important humanist from Ferrara, a famous Latinist and for having published a Latin dictionary and a treatise on diction read and appreciated by Erasmus and Bembo. Engraved title-page depicting the four Evangelist writers and their symbols standing on architectural frame, engraver signed "C.C.F." Dedicated to Giuseppe Ambrosi. 158 (numbered 159) full-page engraved scenes and explanatory text with chapter numbers, printed within borders, with printed biblical text references in margins, on each facing page. The exceptional series of 158 engravings by an unidentified artist (possibly the same C.C.F.?), accompany the devotional text of the Jesuit priest, Bartolomeo Ricci (1542- 1613), yet the plentiful, fresh engravings stand alone as beautiful works of Christian art. The engravings also appeared in Ricci's Vita D. N. Iesu Christi published in Rome the same year. In 1609, the Italian commentary on the Gospels appeared in another Rome edition for that title. A book of unusual design, the Considerationi is arranged to emphasize the images.
