During that time he wrote thousands of letters home and here is a selection of them. He was a born storyteller and his letters give a history of their times. He started as a teacher in cairo and used his long holidays boldly travelling all over the Middle East and Asia Minor . The First World War finds him in Gallipoli, clinically observing and brilliantly describing the doomed campaign and then later he is in the Sinai desert at the battles of Romani and Gaza, encouraging his Egyptian cameleers to charge shouting the McPherson clan war-cry. The later he became "Mamur Zapt" the head of the secret Police in cairo, hot on the trail of drug-dealers, exotic Madames and burgeoning revolutionaries. HB.
