Collected letters in 3 parts of Robert LeMoyne Barrett (1871-1969) and his wife, the writer Katherine Ruth Barrett (nee Ellis, 1879-1961) during a Himalayan pilgrimage. The letters include poetry, songs and even musical notations. Includes 3 fold-out maps and a 4th larger folded map in a pocket at the end of the book. Contains a section on "Caravan Vocabulary", describing commonly used Urdu, Ladakhi and Turki terms.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. American edition in green cloth binding. A journey told in letters, with three folding maps, an Urdu glossary. and "decorations by the ballad singer". The three folding maps of varying sizes are clean and intact, however "the map in pocket at the end of the book" promised in the table of contents is absent. Mild sunning to spine, bumping to corners, foxing to endpapers. 280pp. 10 x 6.5".

From the collection of Larry Swan with his name and address dated 1945 penned to the upper corner of the FFEP otherwise no owner marks or writing on any pages. Swan was a California scientist & climber who was on the first American Makalu expedition in 1954. The book measures 258mm tall x 157mm, and has 280 pages, index, 4 folding maps (one in rear pocket), illustrated EPs. Robert Barret was an American geographer and his wife Catherine was an American author of children's books. They traveled to many remote regions worldwide between 1913 & 1930. With an engraved calling card affixed to the title page signed by Robert Barrett with his corrections to the text and an ink inscription at the top of the page "from the Author" presumably in his wife's hand. An account of the explorer couple's expedition to Ladakh in the 1920s written in epistolary fashion. Robert LeMoyne Barrett was a well-known explorer and founding member of the Association of American Geographers. His wife Katherine was a well-known children's writer. A very good bright copy with minor wear to the covers and some creasing to the bottom of the spine. There is some foxing to the endsheets, half-title and last index page else the text is very good and clean. The maps are in very good condition with light wear. There are actually two copies of the map in the rear pocket of the book. Foreign postage extra on this heavy book. Inscribed by Author(s).

Contains much about the lore and music of the Himalayas. Robert Barrett was a founding member of the American Association of Geographers and previously had carried out much exploration in the Canadian Rockies.

The fair jacket aside, a very good, sound and clean copy. Contains a 5-page Caravan Vocabulary, "Urdu words we taught our village men, with a few Ladakhi and Turki words which we all use commonly." "The text is a series of letters detailing a journey through the Himalayan region in Asia and relating some of the folktales told by local villagers. Among the other interesting oral histories and tidbits related by the author, there is a tale recounted from the perspective of villagers in the Himalayas about British explorer and military man Francis Younghusband who famously crossed the treacherous mountain range and uncharted desert territories as a young man" (National Book Auctions). Barrett was a wealthy explorer and traveler who founded the Association of American Geographers. Barrett traveled through the Canadian Rockies and later financed an expedition into the Himalayas. Barrett is also credited with beginning the Three-Corner-Round nonprofit organization's expeditions through the Sierra Nevada which continue to this day as an outdoor experience for young people.
